João Castelo Ribeiro Gonçalves (October 19, 1937 – December 11, 2016) was a Brazilian politician and lawyer. He served as Governor of Maranhão from March 15, 1979, to May 15, 1982.[1]

Political carrer

In 1970, Castelo was elected federal deputy.

In 1974, Castelo was reelected federal deputy.

In 1978, Castelo was appointed governor of Maranhão by the president João Figueiredo.

In 1982, Castelo was elected senator from Maranhão. Endorsed Luís Rocha.

In 1986, Castelo ran the government of Maranhão, without success.

In 1990, Castelo ran the government of Maranhão for the PRN. Castelo was defeated by Edison Lobão.

In 1994, Castelo ran the senate, lost again to his opponent Edison Lobão. Endorsed Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Epitácio Cafeteira.

In 1996, Castelo ran the mayor of São Luís. But lost to his opponent Jackson Lago.

In 1998, Castelo was elected federal deputy. Endorsed Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Epitácio Cafeteira.

In 2002, Castelo was reelected federal deputy. Endorsed Jackson Lago and José Serra.

In 2004, Castelo ran the mayor, together with Carlos Brandão, being defeated by Tadeu Palácio.

In 2006, Castelo ran the senate, being defeated by Epitácio Cafeteira. Endorsed Jackson Lago and Geraldo Alckmin.

In 2008, Castelo was elected mayor of São Luís. Defeated Flávio Dino.

In 2010, Castelo endorsed Jackson Lago and José Serra.

In 2012, Castelo ran the re-election. But lost to his opponent Edivaldo Holanda Júnior, supported by Flávio Dino.

In 2014, Castelo was elected federal deputy from the winning coalition of Flávio Dino.[2]

Death

He died at the age of 79 on December 11, 2016 after complications from a surgery.[3]
