Seventeen (Hangul: 세븐틴), also stylized as SEVENTEEN or SVT, is a South Korean boy group formed by Pledis Entertainment in 2015. The group consists of thirteen members who are separated into three sub-units, each with different areas of specialization: a 'Hip-Hop Unit', 'Vocal Unit', and 'Performance Unit'. They have released one studio album and four extended plays.

The group's members have been deeply involved in the composition and production of their discography and choreography since debut, leading to the nickname "self-producing" idol group.[1][2]

History

Pre-debut

Seventeen TV

Starting in 2013 Seventeen appeared in regular live broadcasts of a show called Seventeen TV on the online streaming platform UStream. During broadcasts fans were invited to watch Seventeen training in their practice room. The show had multiple seasons during which the trainees were introduced to the public, with some seasons ending in Like Seventeen concerts.[3][4][5]

Big Debut Plan

Prior to debut, Seventeen also appeared in the reality TV show Seventeen Project: Big Debut Plan, broadcast on MBC between May 2–26, 2015. The show was concluded with the group's debut showcase which featured songs that had been written and performed by sub-units in previous episodes.[6]

2015: Debut with 17 Carat and Boys Be

Seventeen debuted on May 26 with a live showcase televised by broadcasting network MBC. They were the first male K-pop group to debut with a one-hour live showcase on a major broadcasting channel, with label-mates Lizzy and Raina serving as MCs.[7] Three days later, their first EP 17 Carat was digitally released, along with the music video for the title track "Adore U".[8] 17 Carat became the longest-charting K-pop album of the year in the US[9] and was the only rookie album to appear on Billboard's "10 Best K-pop Albums of 2015" chart.[10][11]

On September 10 their second EP Boys Be was released in two versions, together with the music video for the title track Mansae, which would later become the highest selling rookie album of 2015.[12] The album's success earned the group awards at the Golden Disk Awards, Seoul Music Awards and Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards.[13][14] Seventeen was also the only K-pop group on Billboard's "21 Under 21 2015: Music's Hottest Young Stars" list.[15][16]

Seventeen held a four-date concert series titled 2015 Like Seventeen – Boys Wish from the 24th to the 26th of December as an end-of-year celebration in Seoul.[17] After the concerts' success, Seventeen held two related concerts the following February in 2016, entitled Like Seventeen – Boys Wish Encore Concert.[18] On February 14, the official fanclub name Carat (Hangul: 캐럿) was announced.[19]

2016: Love & Letter, Asia Tour, and Going Seventeen

Seventeen's first full-length studio album Love & Letter was released on April 25, 2016. The album was released in 'Love' and 'Letter' versions, similarly to their previous EP Boys Be, which also had two versions. The album charted on the Oricon Weekly Pop Album Charts in Japan besides success on domestic charts.[20][21] Seventeen received their first win on a music show with title track "Pretty U",[22] and the album helped Seventeen onto Gaon's 2016 half-yearly physical album charts as the highest charting rookie group on the list.[23]

Love & Letter was re-released as the album Love & Letter Repackage on July 4.[24][25] Promotions for the lead single "Very Nice" were immediately followed by Seventeen's 1st Asia Tour 2016 Shining Diamonds, which included venues in South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Australia and China.[26][27]

On December 5, the group released their third EP Going Seventeen in three versions, as opposed to the previously seen two versions.[28] The album debuted atop the Gaon Album Chart and later became Seventeen's best-selling album of the year, despite the December release date.[29][30]

2017: 17 Japan Concert, Al1 and Diamond Edge

Seventeen performing "Don't Wanna Cry" at Dream Concert 2017.

Seventeen held six concerts in Japan between February 15–24 named 17 Japan Concert: Say The Name #Seventeen. The concerts attracted a total of 50,000 spectators despite the group not having officially debuted in Japan.[31]

On April 1 Seventeen became the first idol group to have a second season of the show One Fine Day after filming their second appearance during their stay in Japan. Their second season was titled One Fine Day in Japan and was created in collaboration between South Korean broadcaster MBC and Japanese network Music On! TV.[32][33]

Seventeen's fourth EP, Al1, was released on May 22, 2017,[34] reportedly selling over 190,000 copies in its first week alone, putting it in the top ten list for most sales in a first week ever.[35] The group embarked on their first world tour, 2017 Seventeen 1st World Tour "Diamond Edge", on July 14, during which they are scheduled to visit thirteen cities in Asia and North America.[36]
