Jaypee University of Information Technology (also J. P. University of Information Technology and JUIT) (Hindi: जेपी सूचना तकनीक विश्वविद्यालय) is a state (private) university in Waknaghat, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, India. The curriculum focuses on undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level studies and research in engineering and applied sciences disciplines.

History

Jaypee University of Information Technology is recognised by the state government of Himachal Pradesh, India. It was set up by Act No. 14 of 2002[3] vide Extraordinary Gazette notification of Government of Himachal Pradesh dated 23 May 2002.[1] JUIT was approved by the University Grants Commission under section 2(f) of the UGC Act, the University commenced academic activities from July 2002.

Location

The university is located 4 kilometers off National Highway 22 (22 km from Shimla) (from Waknaghat) which runs from Kalka to Shimla (India).

The campus is spread over 25 acres (100,000 m2) on the green slopes of Waknaghat. The town of Kasauli can be seen from the university on one side, far on the hill.

Though the university campus can be reached by taxi cabs and autorickshaws available at University Gate and Waknaghat. The nearest railway station is Kaithleeghat, 4 kilometers from Waknaghat and the nearest airport is Shimla. Regular bus service is available to Chandigarh, Delhi and most major stations of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab at Shimla and Solan bus stations.

In addition to the above-mentioned programs, a dual degree program is offered, wherein a student spends four years at JUIT attending aforementioned programs and one year of the MBA program at the Jaypee Business School, Jaypee Institute of Information Technology, NOIDA.

Department of Computer Science Engineering and IT

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering offers the following programs: 4-year B.Tech. program in Computer Science and Engineering, 4-year B.Tech. program in Computer Science and Engineering. M. Tech. Computer Science & Engineering Integrated Degree (5 year). 2-year M.Tech program in Computer Science and Engineering. Ph. D program in Computer Science and Engineering.

The department houses 9 Computer Laboratories with advanced computing facilities. Students are given courses in cutting edge technologies immediately relevant to industry, for example, Web Programming, Web Services, Web Application Development, Data Mining, etc. Further they can opt for courses in futuristic technologies like Quantum Information Theory, Nano-Science & Technology. Current research interests are in the areas of Algorithms, Computer Graphics, Computer Network and Security, Database Systems, Data Warehousing & Data Mining, Digital Image Processing, Internet Technologies, Learning Science & Technology and Soft Computing.

Department of Electronics and Communication Technology

The Department offers a four-year undergraduate programs (B. Tech), five-year dual degree program (integrated B.Tech and M.Tech) and a two-year postgraduate program (M. Tech) in Electronics and Communication Engineering. The courses offered at both level of studies cover areas related to Signal Processing, VLSI Circuit & Embedded Systems, Microwave Engineering and Communication Systems. Modern laboratories supplement these areas of study. Also, some students visit universities abroad in the final semester of their degree. The Department also runs an active Doctoral program. 5 High End Labs have been setup for the Department.

Department of Civil Engineering

The Department prepares students for the award of a B.Tech degree in Civil Engineering. The curriculum has been specially designed keeping in view emerging Civil Engineering needs of the country as well as the modern emphasis on IT enabled Civil Engineering.

At P.G. Level, the department offers 2-year M.Tech programs in Construction Management, Environmental Engineering and in Structural Engineering. In addition, a Ph. D. degree is offered in the areas of Geo technical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Management, Hydro power Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Water Resources

The JUIT Department of Pharmacy was approved by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) for BPharma from 2008.[4][5] The Department offers Bachelor of Pharmacy and a number of Masters Degree programmes, including M. Pharmacy in Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, and PhD research degrees. The department is known for its multidisciplinary graduate research program.[6]

Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics

Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics at JUIT offers B.Tech, B.Tech (Dual degree), M.Tech & Ph.D prograames in both Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. The department faculty is highly qualified academicians and researchers in their respective areas. The department is having distinction of running research projects from various Govt. of India agencies such as DBT, DST, ICMR, DRDO etc. The department is equipped with well maintained research and academic labs. A central instrumentation facility also lies within department having sophisticated instruments like DNA Sequencer, High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC system), Prep-HPLC system, LC-MS system, GC-MS system, Gene Gun, Flow cytometer, Fluorescent microscopes, Fermenter, RT-PCR machine etc.

Department of Physics and Material Sciences

Beside offering a number of courses for Undergraduate Engineering programs, the Department of Physics also carries out Graduate Engineering teaching and Research.The Department offers elective courses like Optical Fiber networks, wireless networks, Nano-science and technology, Bio-sensors to undergraduate students in Electronics and Communication, Computer Science/IT, and Biotechnology/Bioinformatics.

Hostels

About 90% of the students live on-campus. On-campus boarding capacity is for up to 1500 students in various hostel buildings named Shastri Bhawan, Geeta Bhawan, Parmar Bhawan and Azad Bhawan. All rooms are provided with Internet access, Blower and Furniture. Single and double rooms are available with the former being slightly more expensive. Each student is provided with a bed, an almirah, a rack and shelf and a table.

Food at the college mess, Annapurna, is available to students, charges included in boarding fees.

Gymnasium, Television, Sports Complex facilities are also available. Hostel rooms are provided with LAN Ports for individuals Internet facilities. A daily limit of 1 GB for Students has been set.

To provide emotional and counseling support to the students of JUIT the university has on campus a student Counselor whose services are offered free of cost to every student of JUIT.

Computing facilities

There are more than more than 1000 IBM, HP, Lenovo and Dell desktops in the academic block available to students in nine computer labs. A UNIX(OS - Sun Solaris 9) lab has recently been discontinued. Centralized resources including networked printers and scanners are available to students. Computers are also available in the Learning Resource Center for students access.

There are two large student dining halls. Nutritious food decided by the mess administration is provided to students three times a day and hot milk at night.

For eating off campus, students have the option of food kiosks and dhabas by local residents.

Events

Tech fest Murious

"Murious" is the official technical festival of JUIT organized by Tech Club, JYC. Murious means "limitless" and aims at bringing out talent in students from all domains to vie for honor. With events ranging from robotics to programming to some fun-and-frolic events like junkyard wars, it tries to give JUITians a three-day respite from their routine toil. It is usually held during January. MURIOUS, the three day panorama, has established a name for itself, as the place to be in, just by the virtue of the quality of events organized by CREATECH, the Technical club at JUIT in association with ACM-JUIT Student Chapter and IEEE-JUIT Student Branch and the poise with which they are held. MURIOUS, the technical festival is an extravaganza of magnitude composed of technical events and talks along with demonstrations of great brains with the fun events like Robo-Soccer,Roborace etc. It also nurtures the cultural life of the campus by organising Synchroton- the cultural night during MURIOUS.

Le Fiestus

The Cultural festival of JUIT is a three-day event organised by JYC-JUIT Youth Club, held in March or April and called "Le Fiestus". In 2014, the theme of Le Fiestus was "the Reverence for Diversity" and had celebrities like Benny Dayal, DJ NYL, Aadhya Band, EKA Band and Nitin Gupta Rivaldo. It was the largest socio-cultural festival of the state. In 2011, the theme was "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (World Is One Family). The celebrities during the night events were DJG Kilogram (featuring singer Girish Kilogram), Bodhi Satavas, Vishal-Shekhar (Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani) and actress Shruti Pathak. In 2012, Yo Yo Honey Singh was the main attraction of the event. Similarly, every year many stars come by like DJ NYK, Bombay Rockers, Mohit Chauhan, Benny Dayal, Nitin Gupta Rivaldo, and many more.

The fest start with a bang of colorful cultural night showcasing the dance, singing and various talents of JUITians. Faculty members also perform. Group performances are ranged from hip hop and western to Punjabi and Himachali folk dances. Second night is the DJ night which make everyone dance to their high beats.

The third night features a performance by a popular youth icon of Bollywood or Indian music industry.

University has a rich culture of dance and music. A dance crew named VPL (Velhe Pvt. Ltd.) led by Karan Thaman emerged as one of the most influential group and has many winning titles including IIT Roorkee, JUIT, JIIT, JIET, Punjabi University, PEC Chandigarh and Tanda medical college.

Parakram: The Sport Fest

Jaypee University of Information Technology organised its annual sports fest, Parakram from 12 to 14 November 2016. It consisted of 6 events, namely Table Tennis, Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball, Chess and LAN Gaming. This event was a major success as many colleges took part in it. Our sports club provides all basic facilities like fruits,energy drinks and first aid to the participants whoc have come from different colleges (like Thapar ,Maharaja Aggarsein, Chitkara and many more ).

Sanrachna: National level civil tech fest

Civil Engineering Consortium (CEC) is a non-registered, non-profit technical organization of Jaypee University Of Information Technology (JUIT), Solan.Civil engineering consortium was formed way back in February 2008 with an aim & idea to inculcate technical and professional skills amongst the students of civilengineering at JUIT. With both students and faculty as its members, the organization is the active platform for the all the civil engineering activities of the University. CEC is responsible for conducting several Workshops, Seminars, Technical Events and Technical Conferences all related to the field of Civil Engineering.Thought is to provide a platform for the students which they can use to channel their energies to attain the best of technical knowledge in their fields.

TEDxJUIT

In 2014, TEDxJUIT's theme was "Defining the Redefining" which had 12 speakers such as Jasleen Royal, Anuj Dhar, and Roman Sainit. In 2016, its theme was "Life ReeboTED".

JUIT Youth Parliament is a simulation of the Indian Parliament where potential future lawmakers can interact and debate on issues of national importance.In its third edition JYP aims at inspiring the young minds by providing a healthy competition among them to foster debates, dialogues, negotiations and come up with effective resolutions on issues pertaining to national importance with an approach that seeks to find prospective solutions .
