Janine Weber (born June 19, 1991) is an Austrian ice hockey player for the New York Riveters of the National Women's Hockey League. Before playing for the Riveters, Weber played for the Canadian Women's Hockey League's Boston Blades, where she scored the goal which would win them the 2015 Clarkson Cup.
In addition to her American hockey experience, she is also a member of the Austria women's national ice hockey team.
Playing career
She made her international debut with the Austria women's national under-18 ice hockey team at the 2008 U18 Women’s Worlds. At the 2013 IIHF Division I Group A Women’s World Championships, Weber finished the tournament as the scoring champion.[1]
EWHL
A former member of the Vienna Sabres, Weber accumulated 182 points in 81 career games.
NCAA
Pursuing graduate studies in education, Weber enrolled at Providence College. Eligible to skate one season with the Providence Friars program, she suited up for the program during their 2013–14 season. Making her NCAA debut on October 4, 2013 against Union College,[2] Weber also logged her first NCAA point. Of note, Weber would log the game winning goal for Providence in the 19th Annual Mayors Cup,[3] a yearly hockey match that takes place between the two Providence-based NCAA programs, Providence College and the Brown Bears.
CWHL
Selected by the Boston Blades in the 2014 CWHL Draft, Weber made her CWHL debut on November 15, 2014, logging her first career goal in a 6–2 win against the Toronto Furies.[4] Most of the season was spent skating on the third line with fellow rookies Corinne Buie (who played with Weber at Providence) and Jordan Smelker. Scoring the Clarkson Cup winning goal in 2015, Weber became the first European player to accomplish the feat.[5] Weber's stick that she used to score the Cup-winning goal was donated to the Hockey Hall of Fame. In addition, Weber is only the second European player to win the Clarkson Cup, following Katka Mrazova who won said Cup with the Blades in 2013.
NWHL
In the spring of 2015, Weber attended the training camp of the Connecticut Whale, part of the NWHL. Eventually, she would sign with the New York Riveters, making her not only the first player in franchise history to sign with the club, but the first player in the history of the NWHL to be signed to a contract.[6]
Weber would appear in the 1st NWHL All-Star Game, becoming the first European to compete in the All-Star Game. She would score a goal in a 4-0 win on November 20, 2016, against the Connecticut Whale, which was the first shutout in Riveters history. [7]
