Jamie Russell is a retired Canadian ice hockey defenceman who is currently the head coach and general manager for the ECHL expansion franchise Worcester Railers.[1]

Career

Russell started playing for Michigan Tech in 1987. He stayed with the team for only two seasons before turning pro with the Winston-Salem Thunderbirds. After spending most of the next two years in the ECHL Russell retired as a player and started working on his coaching career. After earning an MBA from Lake Superior State University he joined the staff at Ferris State as an assistant under Bob Daniels.[2] Russell spent the next five seasons with the Bulldogs before moving on to accept the same position at Cornell. During his four year tenure in Ithaca Russell was part of the staff that saw the Big Red return to prominence, winning their first ECAC Hockey title in thirty years and followed it up by helping Cornell to their first (and only as of 2017) 30-win season.[3]

In the spring of 2003 Russell accepted his first head coaching job, returning to his alma mater to take over from the retiring Mike Sertich.[4] When Russell assumed control the program had been in disrepair for over twenty years and it showed in the early returns. In his first three seasons Russell's team could only manage single-digit wins but the situation improved greatly in his fourth campaign when the Huskies recorded onlt their second winning season since 1983.[5] Unfortunately Russell wasn't able to sustain the gains and after the team had a small dip the following year it collapsed entirely for his final three seasons. After recording back-to-back 30-loss campaigns Russell resigned as head coach in 2011.[6]

With his time in Houghton, Michigan over Russell joined Nate Leaman's staff at Providence, sticking around for three seasons before he was offered a second head coaching position, this time with the Elmira Jackals. Russell's time with the Jackals provided only minor success as both of his seasons behind the bench ended without a playoff berth. After a mutual parting Russell accepted the opportunity to become the new head coach and general manager of the New York Islanders ECHL affiliate, Worcester Railers. The Railers are set to begin play with the 2017–18 ECHL season.
