History
James Davis is made up of three siblings, fraternal twins Jess and Rey and their brother Auston Reynolds. The name of the group comes from their family, taking the middle name of all the men (James) and the maiden name of their mother (Davis).[2] Jess was signed at the age of 15 and worked with songwriter Harold Lilly as part of her artist development.[2] Rey was mentored by Leon Ware and all three grew up around the music industry.[2] The three began playing together during a rehearsal when they were growing up. Jess described the rehearsal as her and Rey "bickering" when Auston stepped between them and began humming a melody into the microphone.[2] Jess and Rey joined Auston with all three playing together for hours.[2]
James Davis was recognized by Motown President Ethopia Habtemariam and Capitol Records Chairman and CEO Steve Barnett after they saw them collaborate with other songwriters and producers.[4] The group released its first single, Better Than You Are, through Motown in 2015. The song received regular airplay as well as the video being played in regular rotation on MTV and VH1.[5][6] The group's second single was also released in 2015. Titled Co-Pilot, it was influenced by groups that include Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Curtis Mayfield, Kings of Leon, and Nirvana.[7] The group has announced a self-titled album to be released in Spring 2015.[8] Rolling Stone labeled it one of the 68 Reasons This Year Will Rule.[1]
