Jaideep Mehrotra (born 1954 in Mumbai, India) is an Indian artist. He did his schooling from Mayo College, Ajmer Starting his artistic career at a young age of 13,[1] Mehrotra works across mediums like Oils, acrylics, cast resin sculptures, giclee prints, site specific installations and video art. Having had no formal training in art, Jaideep's style has been developed as a concatenation from introspection and exploration.
Mehrotra's works manoeuvre away from conforming to the orthodox approaches. His paintings combine an aesthetic relation between various layers from which emerges a culmination which is rich in visual portrayal and intense in intellectual ideology.
Works
Pioneer of the digital medium in India as an art form,[2] Mehrotra has continually pushed the conceptual thresholds of his visual language to integrate different elements in his works – the historical with the contemporary, the traditional with the modern.
Jaideep held his first solo exhibition in 1967 at the age of 13.[1] The creative quest of not confining to parameters, has driven him to experiment with different mediums & subjects, both within and without the two dimensional. This foray has led him to sculpture, using fabric and resin and the digital domain of installations, web based art, Giclée, audio-visual depiction and short films.[3]

- Designed book covers for Vikram Chandra's Sacred Games,[16] Love and Longing in Bombay[17] (Penguin India Ltd.) and "The Sixth Veda" by Prashant Parikh (Hamilton & Co.Publ. London)
- He has also made short films on Amitabh Bachchan and Mahatma Gandhi, which were screened at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival
- Jaideep was approached by Sula Group to do a painting which was then designed a label for the Sula "Satori" wine, which is the highest selling wine in India.[18][19]

Influences
In his youth, Jaideep was influenced by surrealist artists such as Salvador Dalí & Bikash Bhattacharjee. As an adult, the content of his work embraces both social commentary and arcane phenomenon. Paintings about life as perceived by society, or an enigma of sorts. People's relationship with their emotions and the interactivity with what surrounds them.
Accolades
- He was the first Indian artist to have his own web site, as well as the first Indian artist to have his own interactive CD-ROM[3]
- One of 50 winners (out of 20,000 entries) in the International Digital Art Awards 2003 Exhibition, Australia[20]
- Jaideep was approached by a large diamond conglomerate to paint a portrait of Maharani Gayatri Devi. This turned out to be her last portrait painted as she died soon after.[21]
- In January 2012, Jaideep was listed as one of the artists whose works should be invested into, by Gulf News, one of the leading newspapers of the Middle East.[22]
Personal life
- Jaideep did his schooling in Mayo College, Rajasthan[16] after which he pursued business studies from the University of Mumbai.
- He worked in various corporations in Bombay, Dubai and Africa, before returning to India to switch careers from a businessman to an artist[23]
- Jaideep married his wife Seema in 1989 and they have 2 daughters Anushka and Mallika.[23]
- Jaideep's interests in helping the underprivileged and the aged are well-known.[8] His is also known to be environmentally conscious[24] and a concerned citizen of Mumbai.
