St.Marys cathedral located in Kollam District of Kerala. The church established on 1871 with granted permission by Royal King of Travancore and the blessing of Malankara Metropolitan Pulikkottil Joseph Mar Dionysious II.The whole members of parish represented as ancient and traditional Pakalomattom family[1].Ignatius Zakka I Iwas the Patriarch of Antioch proclaimed this church as a Cathedral in October 2008. The Church is one of the Soonoro Pilgrim Centre in southern Kerala.[2][3]

History

The cathedral is well known as Vilayil Tharakan Gothram Idavaka (വിളയില്‍ തരകന്‍ ഗോത്ര ഇടവക) because of,they are Saint Thomas Christians as one of one of the branch from Palayoor and to be transfered into kuravilangad,Kudassanad and to be part of Kundara in kollam district.They Joined with Kundara Valiyapally after reformation of Malankara Church,when they established church is known as Kundara PuthenPally well known as "Thenguvila Church" for prevent the tradition and family line. This parish attended Synod Of Mulanthuruthy on 1876 convened by the patriarch Ignatius Peter IV.

The altars in the church are dedicated to the Mother of God , Saint Peter , Saint Thomas, Saint George and Saint Gregorios of Malankara.

Holy Soonoro

The Holy Girdle (Soonoro) of Virgin Mary is kept in the form of a "girdle" or knotted textile cord used as a belt, that according to a medieval legend was dropped by the Virgin Mary from the sky to Saint Thomas the Apostle at or around the time of the Assumption of Mary to heaven.

Holy Girdle discovered from Saint Mary Church of the Holy Belt by the Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem I Barsoum and the presence of Alexandros, the Greek Orthodox bishop of Homs, Syria.[4] The former American Arch Bishop Mor Athanasius Yeshu Samuel handed over a portion of the relic to this church in 1972.[5]
