Seán William McLoughlin (born 7 February 1990), better known through his online pseudonym Jacksepticeye (or simply Jack), is an Irish producer, game commentator, and internet personality, known primarily for his comedic Let's Play series on video games and vlogs on YouTube.[1]

As of August 2017, his channel has over 7.7 billion total video views and over 16.2 million subscribers,[2] making it the 31st most-subscribed channel on YouTube.[3]

Career

Before McLoughlin made videos on YouTube, he was the drummer of a band known as Raised to the Ground. McLoughlin has mentioned this a few times in YouTube videos and on Twitter and Facebook.

McLoughlin started to work on his YouTube channel in 2012, under the name "jacksepticeye", in which he posted gameplay videos, although his first video posted on the channel was a voice impression of Solid Snake, a character from the Metal Gear video game series.[4] In 2013, the YouTuber was mentioned in a PewDiePie video, causing him to gain mass popularity. Although his first video was made on 12 November 2012, he joined YouTube on 24 February 2007.

During the month of July 2014, McLoughlin's channel gained over 57 million views.[5] At the time, his channel had only 800,000 subscribers, which is 5% of its current subscriber count.[6]

McLoughlin co-hosted the South by Southwest event in March 2016.[7][8]

He co-starred as the antagonist of the second season of the TV show Scare PewDiePie. However, the series' second season was cancelled before its release, which would have taken place on March 9, 2017.[9]

In April 2017, McLoughlin revealed that he voiced a character for the video game Pinstripe along with other YouTube personalities, such as Game Grumps' Dan Avidan and Ross O'Donovan, as well as PewDiePie.[10][11] In his livestream for the game, McLoughlin also exclaimed his love for voice acting and that he hopes to be part of more voice acting projects in the future.

In May 2017, he moved to Brighton, England.[12]

In June 2017, Polaris, a division of The Walt Disney Company, announced that McLoughlin would be featured on D XP, a television programming block on the channel Disney XD. The title of the series featuring McLoughlin is Polaris: Player Select.[13] He and YouTuber Strawburry17 hosted the Level Up! games panel at the D23 Expo 2017.[14][15]

Video style

McLoughlin starts all of his videos by saying, "Top of the mornin' to ya laddies! My name is Jacksepticeye!" in a loud tone, which is one of the main reasons he calls himself the "most energetic video-game commentator on YouTube".[16]

McLoughlin has a symbol on his channel, named "Septic-Eye-Sam". It is seen on most, if not all, of his merchandise, including plush toys of "Sam". It is the same color as his vibrant green hair, which he dyed in accordance with fellow internet personality, Markiplier, for charity.[17]
