The society was founded in 1969 by the local Muslim community and is known for President Barack Obama's visit on February 3, 2016.

History

The Islamic Society of Baltimore was founded in 1969, by several Muslim families who met weekly on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.[1] As the Muslim community grew, they needed a larger facility.[2] So in 1982, the society purchased an 8-acre lot off Johnnycake Road where the present Masjid Al-Rahmah was built in 1984.[3] A few years later, a small housing complex was built adjacent to the mosque, and by 1987, a full-time K-12 primary school, Al-Rahmah School, was established. A Quran Academy and Sunday school were founded in the next decade and the multi-purpose hall was built in 1996.[4] In 1999, scholar Qari Muhammad Zahid joined the community and became a big part of the society, and he is now the director of the Quran Academy.[5] He, along with other scholars, currently leads daily prayers at the mosque. In 2003, Mohammed Adam El-Sheikh, who has been the imam for 14 years, left the mosque[6].

The center was the location of President Barack Obama's first presidential visit to a U.S. mosque on February 3, 2016.[7][8]

In June 2017, Shaikh Yaseen, who was the resident scholar for 4 years, made a farewell speech and left for his home country.
