The Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) is an online nutrition school, headquartered in New York City, that offers a health coach training program. The school provides holistic nutrition education in addition to business training to prepare students for starting their own health coaching practices.
History
The Institute for Integrative Nutrition was founded in 1992 by Joshua Rosenthal. The school initially offered in-person classes in New York before transitioning to an online learning platform.[1]
Before founding IIN, Rosenthal studied nutrition concepts under Michio Kushi, focusing on macrobiotics. Kushi’s One Peaceful Network World approach focused on using macrobiotic nutrition to create healthy individuals and communities. These studies prompted Rosenthal to investigate alternative theories of nutrition and the One Peaceful Network approach helped inspire IIN’s current mission to create a “ripple effect of health and happiness that transforms the world”.[2] IIN is now the world’s largest nutrition school and has more than 100,000 graduates worldwide.[3][4]
In January 2015, Congress recognized January 12-18 as National Health and Wellness Coach Week.[5] A letter to IIN from Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio recognized the role of health coaches in helping prevent lifestyle-related disease and reversing the health crisis in the United States.[6][7]
Curriculum
IIN’s curriculum includes courses in nutrition, health and wellness concepts and coaching and business skills.[3]
The concepts of bioindividuality and Primary Foods are central to the IIN curriculum.[2] The concept of Primary Food states that health is based on more than just nutrition and includes things like healthy relationships, physical activity, spiritual practice and a fulfilling career.[8]
IIN hosts leaders in the fields of health and nutrition as guest teachers. IIN guest teachers include Deepak Chopra, Dr. Oz, Arianna Huffington, Dr. Andrew Weil and Geneen Roth.[2][9]
Accreditation and educational partnerships
The Institute for Integrative Nutrition is a member of the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS) and is a has been a licensed vocational school by the New York State Education Department since 2009.[3][10]
IIN has partnerships with educational institutions including schools in the State University of New York and California State University systems.[11] Partner universities include Purchase College,[12] Maryland University of Integrative Health,[13] Goddard College,[14] California Institute of Integral Studies,[15] Excelsior College[16] and California State University Long Beach.[17]
