Idrissa Gana Gueye (born 26 September 1989) is a Senegalese professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Premier League club Everton and the Senegal national team.
Club career
Early career
Born in Dakar, Gueye spent his early career in Senegal for Diambars before joining French club Lille in 2008.[1] He broke through into the first team in the 2010–11 season, in which Lille won Ligue 1, and became a regular starter in the league and the UEFA Champions League over the following four seasons.[2]
Aston Villa
Aston Villa paid Lille £9m for the service of Gueye, fighting off interest from Southampton, and he signed for the club on 10 July 2015. [3][4] [5] He played for Villa 35 times in a season in which they were relegated from the Premier League.[6]
Everton
After Aston Villa were relegated from the Premier League, Everton triggered a release clause in his contract,[7] and signed Gueye on a four-year deal on 2 August 2016.[8] He made the highest number of successful tackles and interceptions per game across Europe's top five leagues over the 2016 calendar year.[9][10][11] Gueye scored his first league goal for Everton in a 2–0 victory over Sunderland at Goodison Park on 25 February 2017.[12] He became the first player in Europe's top five leagues to win 100 tackles in the 2016–17 season.[13]
International career
Gueye made his international debut for Senegal in 2011,[1] and has appeared in FIFA World Cup qualifying matches for them.[14] He also represented them at the 2012 Olympics,[14] at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations[15] and at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
