Hungpung also called as Hundung is a village located south of Ukhrul in Ukhrul district, Manipur state, India. The village falls under Ukhrul sub division. Hungpung borders with Hunphun village at Thingrasa between the union bank and viewland baptist church. National highway 150 that connects Imphal-Ukhrul-Jessami passes through the village. The village is sub-divided into seven major parts; Khambasom, Phungreitang east, Phungreitang west, Dungrei, Hamleikhong, Awungtang, Vashimtang and Kaziphung. Hungpung is flanked by Nungshong in the east, Pharung in the west, Shangshak in the south and Hunphun in the north.

Hungpung is one of the largest villages in Ukhrul district. The senior citizens call her Thawaijao Hungdung, whereas grandchildren calls her Hungdung and her contemporary citizens call her Hungpung. Decades ago, Hungpung village was a big elder brother to many tangkhul villages. History has it that under the leadership of Hungpung, the villages of 1)Hungpung 2)Pharung 3)Ruithar 4)Tashar 5)Khangkhui 6)Hunphun 7)Nungshong 8)Langdang 9)Shirui 10) Lunghar 11)Longpi and 12)Shihai were the umbrella of 'Hungpung Long' a History revelation. Though, social life and political scenario of the village have changed hitherto, the enchanting topography of the village still causes wild imaginations for visionaries.

Geographically, the village is surrounded by villages with her rich natural resources and scenic beauty such as Khangkhui Mangsor (cave) and Limestone , 14 km away on the east, Shirui Kashong (peak), 15 km away on the north east, Harva Khangai (peak) (appox) 15 km away on the east, Phangrei (plateau), approx 17 km away on the north east, Limestone at Lambui, Chromite at phangrei, chromite at shirui, Hungpung Movah cave and so on and so forth. Over and above the land and climate are conducive for growing agricultural crops of all types , such as paddy, potatoes, cabbage, solanum aethiopicum (ayangthei), curcuma longa (yaingang), Garlic, ginger, Brinjal, Mustard, Mator, chilli, Apple, beans, maize, pumpkin, squash (chow chow), Banana,Tomato, gooseberry, cucumber, mayangthei (peach) and other cash crops. In addition, natural vegetables such as Ngayung (houttuynia cordata), shiruihan (menthe spicata) , hanvathan (plantago major ), maroi siguipai ( eryngium foetidum), Kongreihan (centella asiatica) etc are available during the season's of the year.The village is good for human habitat and, as a matter of fact, the village is densely populated till date. In Biblical terms, it is a village of milk and honey.

Total population

According to 2011 census,[1] Hungpung has 2036 households with the total of 10785 people of which 5575 are male and 5010 are female. Of the total population, 1433 were in the age group of 0–6 years. The average sex ratio of the village is 935 female to 1000 male which is lower than the state average of 985. The literacy rate of the village stands at 86.64% which is higher than the state average 76.94%. Male literacy rate stands at 89.68% while female literacy rate was 83.41%.

People and occupation

The village is home to people of Tangkhul Naga tribe. The majority of the inhabitants are Christians. Agriculture is the primary occupation of the inhabitants. The production of rice beer (fermented rice) and sand was also one of the sources of occupation. The village is well known in the district for its scenic natural beauty and rich flora and fauna. The village has a rich deposit of limestone and there used to be a cement factory, which now is non-functional.[2] Hungpung is famous for the yearly pre-harvest festival celebration, locally known as Dharreo wherein the neighboring villages and tourists participate in large number.[3] The village is one of the 44 villages in Ukhrul district that would be affected being a catchment area when the Mapithel Dam is finally completed.[4]

The sitting MLA from 44 Ukhrul (ST) Assembly Constituency, Samuel Risom[5] hails from Hungpung village.
