The HomePod is a smart speaker developed by Apple Inc., similar to the Amazon Echo and Google Home.[1] It was first announced on June 5, 2017 at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. The HomePod is scheduled for release in December 2017, and will be available in white and space gray.[2]
Design
The HomePod supports AirPlay 2, which allows multi-speaker audio streaming, uses the Apple A8 chip, and utilizes the Siri software.[3]
On the top of the device, a touchscreen displays a dynamic waveform, similar to the that displayed on other Apple devices when Siri is activated. It also allows input to adjust volume, play and pause.[3]
It features 7 tweeters in its base and a 4-inch woofer towards the top. 6 microphones around HomePod’s centre gauge the acoustics of the room; software channels different layers of the mix in different directions accordingly for improved sound quality and separation.[3]
Software
In late July 2017, an official Apple firmware file was accidentally released for AudioAccessory1,1, which was later revealed by Twitter users to be firmware for the HomePod. Not only was the file leaking information about the HomePod, it also leaked information about the upcoming iPhone 8, set to be unveiled officially in September 2017. The HomePod was shown to have similar specifications to the iPhone 6, released in 2014 with 1 GB of RAM and a 272×340 screen resolution. The iOS SpringBoard is called SoundBoard in the HomePod firmware.
