Holy Family University Center (Centro Universitario Sagrada Familia), Úbeda, is a Jesuit school founded in 1941 in Eastern Andalusia, Spain, for teacher education. It also sponsors initiatives for the advancement of education for peoples of all cultures and economic strata, at times through the independent SAFA Foundation.[1][2][3] It is affiliated with the University of Jaen.[4]
Chronology
In 1940 Fr. Rafael Villoslada Peula founded Professional Schools of the "Sagrada Familia" for the education of the lower classes in Andalusia, and for war orphans throughout Spain. The next year he opened the Center SAFA Ubeda, on San Fernando Street Corredera # 7. By 1944 it had 24 students in teacher training at the center of Villanueva del Arzobispo.
The Primary Education Act of 1945 fostered "national Catholicism".[5] In 1948 teachers' classes moved to the Center at Ubeda, with 64 students. In 1949 Bishop Rafael Garcia entrusted to the Society of Jesus "Sagrada Familia" School of Education, with approval also by the Archbishop of Valencia who was president of the Episcopal Commission for Education, and with recognition from the Ministry of Education.
In 1950 a new curriculum was devised in line with Article 31 of the Act for Normal Schools, then in 1959 profound changes were necessitated due to government directives requiring four years of study, and that entrants must graduate from elementary school or its equivalent. In 1960 cultural activities at the school increased with the Hall of Culture, theatrical performances, a choir, sports, and a literary magazine.
From 1964 student teachers must follow the Oficialía de Delineación to teach in elementary schools. In 1966 the fourth year of internship was moved to third quarter of third year.
By the Primary Education Act of 1967, the Baccalaureate Plan is required for admission to teachers' studies, which would last three years: two of schooling with a maturity test and the third a practicum. The possibility of direct access to the Civil Service is established. From 1968 the Bishop and the Episcopal Commission issued permits for students to enter the program.
The General Education Law (Law Villar Palasí) of 1970 made primary education free and compulsory.[6] In 1973 SAFA was authorized to award university degrees in humanities, Spanish and modern languages, and sciences. In 1978 "Sagrada Familia" University School was recognized as a school for primary teachers affiliated with the University of Granada. In 1982 specialty preschool was authorized.
The year 1987 brought a waiver from the Bishopric of Jaen for the SAFA Foundation to own the College. In 1991 the school was awarded the Silver Medal of Andalusia Professional Schools. The Physical Education program opened with 41 students.
The University of Jaén was founded in 1993 and in 1995 it completed an Agreement on Academic Cooperation with SAFA. Specializations in childhood education, primary education, foreign language, and physical education were approved. In 1997 the Journal of Communication Research and Educational Experiences was launched by the School of Education, and the Musical Education specialization began.
The year 2001 saw the reform of the curricula of the specialties of Physical Education, Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, Music Education, and Foreign Language (English). In 2002 the Gold Medal of the City of Ubeda was awarded to the SAFA Foundation, and the school was awarded the AENOR Certificates of Quality Management and Environmental Management.[7]
In 2003 a "Faith and Joy" cooperation agreement was signed. Classes of the four joint programs in Primary Education with Physical Education, Early Childhood Education, Musical Education, and Foreign Language began. The Alumni Association formed in 2004. The same year evaluation began based on the Andalusian Plan for Quality in Universities.
In 2007 the Plan of Research Support encouraged the development of research in the school, and 2010 saw the implementation of the new Degree in Education and Primary Education.[8]
In 2015 SAFA considered the request of University of Jaen that it offer a double degree in elementary education and social education,[9] and the following year the Chair of Ethics and Social Responsibility was founded.[10] At this time SAFA also began experimenting with a model of elementary education where students learn in groups.[11]
