Hemidactylus scabriceps (scaly gecko) is a species of nocturnal, terrestrial, insectivorous gecko found in South India and northern Sri Lanka. It inhabits dry, sandy tracts mainly in the plains.
Distribution
Tamil Nadu in South India and Sri Lanka. Type locality: Ramnad in Tamil Nadu, south India. Precise distribution records include Adayar near Chennai, Ramnad, Mannampandal near Mayiladuthurai, Tuticorin, Vallanad sanctuary Tirunelveli and Madurai districts in Tamil Nadu and dry sandy low-lying regions of northern Sri Lanka in localities such as Marichhukate in Northern Province.
Description
Scales on dorsum imbricate. Forehead covered with small granules. Finger and toes unwebbed. Lamellae under fourth toes are divided, numbering 5-7. Subdigital lamellae of some digits only partially divided. Tail rather large and thick-set, rounded in cross sections with imbricate scales. Males have pre-anal pores. Dorsum grayish brown with dark and white random reticulations and whorls. Venter creamy white.
