Henry "Harry" Gifford (1884 — 1952 (aged 67[1]) born in Kirkby-in-Furness, Lancashire, was an English professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1900s, 1910s, and 1920s, playing at representative level for Great Britain, England, and Lancashire, and at club level for Ulverston Hornets ARLFC, and Barrow, as a fullback (182-appearances), Wing (65-appearances), Centre (54-appearances), or stand-off/five-eighth/Scrum-half/Halfback (25-appearances), i.e. number 1, 2 or 5, 3 or 4, 6, or 7, and latterly in the Forwards (non-specific forward 21-appearances), e.g. Prop (25-appearances), Hooker (6-appearances), Second-row (6-appearances), or loose forward/lock (39-appearances), in the era of contested scrums, his death was registered in Ulverston district.

International honours

Harry Gifford won caps for England while at Barrow in 1908 against Wales, in 1909 against Australia (3 matches),[2] and won caps for Great Britain while at Barrow in 1908-9 against Australia (2 matches).[3]

Club career

Harry Gifford signed for Barrow from Ulverston Hornets in 1901 for one guinea, i.e. one pound and one shilling (based on increases in average earnings, this would be approximately £376.80 in 2013),[4] his last match for Barrow was 4-52 defeat by Wigan at Central Park, Wigan on Saturday 21 October 1922.[5]

Honoured at Barrow Raiders

Harry Gifford is a Barrow Raiders Hall of Fame inductee,[6] his commemorative plaque is displayed in the Barrow Raiders boardroom.[5]
