Harriet Goren

Harriet Goren is an American graphic designer and artist.

Early life

She attended Orthodox synagogue until as a "...teenager with serious doubts about religion", she ceased going. [1] She sang in amateur choirs and eventually began to chant the Torah. [2] She studied at Yale University, where she completed her BA in Arts (with a concentration in painting).[3]

Career

Goren designs logos and fonts, and does the graphic design for websites, books, flyers and newsletters. [4] In 2002, Goren launched her own graphic design company, named Harriet R Goren Design.[5] Prior to that, she was senior art director at Iguana Studios, a web development firm, and design director at Sloan Group.[6] She teaches graphic design at Touro College.[7]

With her firm, she works with her clients and asks them questions about their business or service in order to develop a "mutually satisfactory visual design".[8] She asks clients questions to find out what their style is and find out what type of message they want to get across.[9] She has found that it can be hard to communicate thoughts and concepts visually. To help transform concepts into images, she asks clients "metaphoric questions".[10]

She created a font, Morire, that was part of the experimental "grunge typography" movement of the 1990s, so-named because it shared aesthetic principles with the music genre of the same name. Other graphic designers who developed grunge typography included Hat Nguyen (Droplet) and Eric Lin (Tema Canante).[11][12]
