Guy Reschenthaler is an American politician who is a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate, representing the 37th district. A Republican, he previously served as a district judge and in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG) during the Iraq War.

Early Life & Education

Guy Reschenthaler was raised in Pittsburgh’s South Hills, graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 2001. Reschenthaler graduated from Penn State Erie, The Behrend College in 2004 with a B.A. in political science in just three years (2001-2004). While at Behrend College, Guy received the Most Outstanding First Year Student Award. Upon graduation, Reschenthaler attended Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh earning a J.D. in 2007. While at Duquesne, Reschenthaler founded the Military Law Society chapter and interned at the U.S. District Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh. After law school, Reschenthaler served in the United States Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG) in Iraq.[1]

Military career

In the United States Navy, Reschenthaler deployed to Baghdad, Iraq in 2009 where he prosecuted terrorists at the Central Criminal Court of Iaq. In 2010, Reschenthaler was one of three attorneys who defended a Navy SEAL accused of abusing the notorious terrorist, the Butcher of Fallujah. During the court-martial, Reschenthaler cross examined the terrorist, as well as developed the defense strategy that stewarded the defense teams to victory.[2][3] The Navy SEAL Reschenthaler represented and the other SEALs charged were eventually fully acquitted of all charges.

Reschenthaler was promoted to the Officer in Charge of the Texas-Oklahoma Area of Operations for Navy Legal. In this position, Reschenthaler was awarded the prestigious Michael Taylor Shelby Award for Professional, Ethics and Dedication in the practice of law.[4][5] Reschenthaler left military service in 2012.

Civil Service

After his Navy service, Reschenthaler returned to Pittsburgh to practice law in spring 2012 before being elected Magisterial District Judge in Pittsburgh's South Hills in 2013.[1][6]

Reschenthaler was elected District Judge in May 2013. His tenure as District Judge was marked by intense community involvement. Reschenthaler made serious strides combating truancy.[7] He also fought to prevent cyberbullying in schools and held numerous educational programs to make the public aware of the threat.

After the resignation of Democratic state senator Matt Smith, Reschenthaler won the Republican nomination for a special election in the 37th state Senate district in July 2015. He defeated the Democratic nominee, Heather Arnet, in the general election to serve the remainder of Smith's term, ending in 2016.[8][9] He was sworn-in upon the official certification of the election results, on November 24, 2015.[10][11][12]

Reschenthaler was of counsel at Pittsburgh law firm Brennan, Robins & Daley and serves as a member of Penn State Behrend's Political Science Advisory Board.[1][13]
