Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar, was founded in 1995. The jurisdiction of the university extends to the courses being run in the areas of science, technology, engineering, pharmacy and management. GJU (nickname) is north India's first university getting 3rd time continuous 'A' by NAAC.
Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar, was established on October 20, 1995 by an Act of the Legislature of the State of Haryana. It was formally inaugurated on November 1, 1995. It is named after Guru Jambheshwar Ji Maharaj, a saint environmentalist of the 15th century.
Location
The GJU is located about 5 km from the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University i.e HAU; 1 km from the Hisar Airport; 2 km from the Blue Bird Lake; 3 km from the bus station along the National Highway 10, 4 km from the town center & main market area; 6 km from the Hisar Junction railway station; 6 km from Mahabir Stadium; 167 km from the Indira Gandhi International Airport; 180 km from the New Delhi railway station; and 235 km from the Chandigarh International Airport.
Recognition and accreditation
The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) for recognition of degrees, on 11.1.1996 and, under section 12(B) of the UGC Act to be eligible for central assistance on 7.2.1997, i.e., within 15 months of its coming into being. The university opted for accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous organization of the University Grants Commission, in 2001-02. As a result of the exercise, the NAAC accredited this university at "A" level (institutional score 85%).

Campus
The university is situated over about 372 acres. Approximately 200 acres has been developed.
The university has seven teaching blocks. There are 149 residential houses for employees. Construction work for staff quarters and sewer line is under progress. Many more are planned. The university has the branch of Punjab National Bank with ATM and a post office. The university is running its own cafeteria.
Academic programs
The university offers a wide range of academic programmes and courses at post-graduate and undergraduate level. All these courses are designed by taking into consideration the special needs of the market and the Industry and the Model Curricula supplied by the UGC/AICTE. Emphasis is laid on both theoretical and practical training for exposing students to the latest developments in areas of science and technology. For the purpose, the university invites academicians, professionals and researchers from institutions and industries. Adequate training and placement facilities are available for the students. The university arranges campus interviews. Workshops, seminars and symposia are conducted regularly. In-plant industrial training is an essential component of most of the courses.
Credit-based systems of examinations
The university switched to a credit-based system for all courses in 2006-07. The prominent features of the credit-based system are the process of continuous evaluation of a student's performance and flexibility to allow the students to progress at an optimum pace suited to individual ability and convenience, subject to fulfilling minimum requirement for continuation.

University Computer & Informatics Centre
The University Computer & Informatics Centre (UCIC) (formerly University Computer Centre) was established in 1998 primarily to cater to the basic needs of students, faculty and staff. It has computing equipment of latest configuration and Internet connectivity of 2 Mbit/s lease line through ERNET India and 2/8 Mbit/s Broadband connection through BSNL. The UCIC has a network of 135 computers with Internet facility.
Online journal facility is also available under INFLIBNET, a UGC programme. All the online journals like those published by Annual Reviews, Blackwell Publishing, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Project Muse, Springer Link, Taylor & Francis, ACS, AIP, APS, IOP, JSTOR, RSC,ISID, JCCC and IEEE are available. In addition to providing facilities for conducting the practical classes of common computer courses, it is a central facility to meet all the computing and research requirements for students and faculty. Library
The University Library building has a total area of 55,833 sq. ft. of which the library has been allocated a space of 22,838 Sq.ft. The Library has two Reading Halls with a total capacity of 250 seats. One reading hall with a seating capacity of 80 has been provided for Periodical Section where all the journal are displayed and back volumes are made available. This hall has a separate reading area for newspapers and magazines. The other reading hall with a capacity of 80 seats has been provided to the students for study. During examination days this reading hall remains open round the clock (24 hours).
The Library at present has a collection of 70,860 books. During this year, a total of 6579 books purchased. The Library has subscriptions to 152 Indian journals and 37 foreign journals in 2008. The journals already subscribed in the library were reviewed in view of their use pattern. The library subscribes 62 magazines and 20 newspapers to cater to the general information needs. The library has provided list of journals of 14 publishers available online to all the chairpersons of the departments for the use by the faculty and the students. The library renewed one online database, 'PROWESS'. The ibrary has subscribed one database, Emerald Management Xtra 175.
Using the Integrated Library Computer Software, "LibSys," the complete database of holdings of books, library membership including students, officers, faculty members, research scholars and non-teaching staff has been created. The bar-coded library identity cards have been provided to all categories of members for borrowing facility. The library provides On-line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) facility to the members to search and know the status of the reading material. On this system, books on demand are reserved and follow up action by generating letters and sending to the students is taken instantly.
The library has computerized other library operations including acquisition to facilitate students, research scholars and faculty members. The Internet facility is provided in University Computer & informatics Center located in the University Library.
The library is a member of INFLIBNET, 'Information Library Network' which undertakes the subscription of e-journals and makes them available in the consortium mode. At present under consortium access of full text journals of 14 publishers is available to the academic community of the University.
The library is also a member of INDEST (Indian National Digital Library in Engineering, Science and Technology) Consortium set up by the Human Resource Ministry through which e-journals on Science & Technology including IEEE are made available. The University Library is institutional member of American Library. The library provides Book Bank facility to the Undergraduate, Post Graduate and SC/ST students of the University. The photocopy services facility is being provided in the Library through a Commercial private vendor on University approved rates.
The University Library is in the process of creation of Digital Library for which one Server, 4 Computer Systems, 1 UPS of 5 KVA, 1 Laser Jet Printers have been purchased. The LS Digital Software for digital Library has also been installed. The faculty members of University Library consist of one University Librarian and two Assistant Librarians.
Central Instrumentation Laboratory
The Central Instrumentation Laboratory (CIL) is established for the students, research scholars and teachers of the university who are actively engaged in R&D activities in the emerging areas of Science, Technology & Engineering. The CIL has sophisticated instruments like High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPCL), Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), UV-VIS-NIR Spectrophotometer, Differential Scanning Calorimeter, Lyophilizer and FT-IR Spectrometer. The process for procurement of LC-MS, HPTLC and Spectroflurimeter is in progress. These instruments are of multidisciplinary utility. They are generally used to pursue R&D activities by the students of Biotechnology, Nanotechnology Food Technology, Pharmaceutical Science, Physics, Environmental Science & Engineering and Chemistry.
Training and placement
A training and placement cell has been set up to keep a constant liaison with potential employers/industries and provide guidance to the students. The cell works for the students to arrange industrial summer training that helps them get placements towards the completion of their courses.
Sports
The University Sports Department was established in 1996. The Sports Complex is spread in an area of 40 acres. The Sports Complex has one multipurpose hall for indoor games such as badminton, table tennis, carom board, chess, 13 station multi-gym, yoga and weightlifting. One half-cemented cricket pitch, one ground each for football, handball, cricket and 400-meter athletic track and three volleyball grounds. In addition, two cemented basketball courts with lights, two volleyball courts with fencing and lights, two synthetic lawn tennis courts with lights and fencing have been constructed. The sports equipment/kits are issued during tournaments.
The teaching departments have been divided into eight houses for sports competitions. The Inter-House Tournaments are conducted in games annually, i.e., Chess, Football, Badminton, Table Tennis, Handball, Cross-Country Race, Weight lifting, Volleyball shooting & smashing, Cricket and Annual Athletic Meet. Sports facilities for indoor games have been created in the Boys and Girls Hostels. Adventure Sports activities are also conducted in events, i.e., Skiing Course, Motor Bike Tour and Trekking etc.
The Executive Council has approved that one option out of Cultural/NSS/sports activities in undergraduate courses viz. B.Tech., BPTh. B.Pharma., will be offered to student in first and third semester.
Research programmes
The University offers intensive research programmes leading to award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in all Departments offering post-graduate courses. Sufficient Laboratory & Infrastructural facilities are available. The registration for research programmes is done through entrance exam and pre-Ph.D. course.
SC/ST Cell
An SC/ST Cell has been set up in the University to ensure proper implementation of schemes of the UGC, the government of India and the state government concerning scholarships, stipends etc. for welfare of reserved categories. The guidelines, for types of scholarship/stipends as revised by the central and state government are notified to all departments which are got displayed on the Notice Boards of the concerned departments. These got incorporated in the University Prospectus for its vide publicity and benefit of the students of the reserved categories. This Cell ensures that these guidelines are strictly adhered to.
