Gurrane
Gurranewaterig, sometimes known as Gurrane or Gurranes is a townland of the large parish of Innishannon, County Cork, Ireland. Close to Crossbarry it boundaries the main road to Killumney, Ovens, and Ballincollig.
Within the area are townlands of Crossbarry, Ballinphellic, Ballymurphy, Killeens, Curra, and more.
A tributary of the Owenaboy river flows through Gurrane on its way to join the river at Crossbarry.
The area has one primary school - Gurrane National School. A former principal of the school, Richard Barrett, was executed in 1922 in revenge for the killing of Sean Hales. They had been childhood friends. Visitors to the school can learn more on the historic links.
Gurrane
The townland name of Gurrane is a popular one around Ireland, as it comes from the old Irish word for Grove. There are numerous Gurranes in County Cork, including Gurrane, Mitchelstown, which is on the northern outskirts of the town bordering County Limerick. Townlands of Gurrane can also be found in Kerry and Galway.
