Longo Brothers Fruit Markets Inc., commonly known as just Longo's, is a family-run grocery chain in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, Ontario, Canada. Its corporate office is located in Vaughan, and had been previously located in Mississauga.
Longo's was founded by brothers Tommy, Joe and Gus Longo in 1956, who established their first store at the intersection of Yonge Street and Castlefield Avenue in Toronto.[1] This store was about 190 square metres (2,000 sq ft), and had eight family members working there. The Longo brothers opened their second store in 1962, on Woodbine Avenue.[1]
Longo's owns and operates 30 stores in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. A 4,500-square-metre (48,000 sq ft) flagship store opened in Maple Leaf Square in downtown Toronto, and a new store opened in Mississauga on 26 February 2015. The newest store, opened in Ancaster in September 2016, is the southwesternmost location in the chain, and the first in the Hamilton market.[2]
Longo's currently has over 5,000 employees, and has been selected as one of Canada's Top 50 privately managed companies by the Financial Post newspaper for nine consecutive years (2000-2008), achieving platinum status.[3]
Longo's publishes a free magazine called Experience Magazine.
Joe Longo Sr. died in fall 2008. Tommy Longo died on 30 January 2011.
Grocery gateway acquisition
In 2004, Longo's acquired the online grocery retailer Grocery Gateway, providing Longo's with the largest online grocery retail presence in Canada.
