Gregorio Rosa Chávez (born 3 September 1942) is a Salvadoran Roman Catholic prelate who serves as the Auxiliary Bishop of San Salvador. He was a close collaborator of the slain archbishop Blessed Óscar Romero.[1]

Pope Francis made Rosa a Cardinal on 28 June 2017. He is the first Cardinal from El Salvador. It is very rare for the Pope to name an Auxiliary Bishop as a Cardinal. In archdiocesan affairs, the Archbishop still has precedence; however, in the ranking of the hierarchy, the Cardinal ranks higher- they will collaborate closely.[2]

Besides his native Spanish, he can speak French and has some knowledge of English and Portuguese.
