Goyo Montero
Goyo Montero Morell (born 1975 in Spain, Madrid) is a Spanish ballet dancer, a ballet director and a choreographer.
Born in 1975 in Madrid, Spain. He was formed by Carmen Roche and completed his studies at the Royal Conservatory for Professional Dance in Madrid and the School of the National Ballet of Cuba. Among others he received the following awards as a dancer: Winner of the Prix Lausanne in 1993 and Gold Medal and Grand Prix at the International Ballet Competition of Luxembourg. Critics of Dance Europe Magazine nominated him Best Dancer of the season 2003/2004. Goyo Montero was Principal Dancer at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and soloist at the Oper Leipzig, Staatstheater Wiesbaden and the Royal Ballet of Flanders. He has been invited as guest soloist with the National Ballet of Mexico, the Perth City Ballet and the Ballet d‘Europe among others. As a choreographer he created pieces for Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opera of Kiel, Ankara and Izmir State Ballet, Modern Dance Turkey, the Company Gregor Seyffert, Ballet Carmen Roche, National Ballet of Cuba, the Ballet de Teatres de la Generalitat Valenciana, the Company Maggio Danza and Compañia Nacional de Danza among others.
With his choreographies Goyo Montero took part in different festivals, amongst others in Havanna (XX International Ballet Festival), Florence (71th Maggio Musicale Fiorentino), Granada (International Festival of Dance and Music), Zaragoza (Expo Zaragoza), Madrid (Madrid en Danza and Veranos de la Villa) and Tokyo (Expo Aichi Tokio Forum).
With season 2008/2009 Goyo Montero is ballet director and principal choreographer of Nuremberg Ballet. His works for Nuremberg Ballet include: “Romeo and Juliet” (2009),“El Sue˜no de la Rázon - The Dream of Reason” (2010), “Carmen”(2010), “Treibhaus - Greenhouse” (2011), “Nutcracker” (2011), “Don Juan” (2012), “Faust” (2012), “Cinderella” (2013), “Black Bile” (2014), “Cyrano” (2014), “111” (2015)," Latent" (2015), and "Four Quartets"(2016)
In 2012 Goyo Montero has been member of the jury at the 40th Prix de Lausanne. Since 2013 his choreographies became part of the contemporary repertoire of this competition.
Among his awards: “Villa de Madrid” (2006), the 1st award of the Iberoamerican competition of Choreography (2006), the Villanueva award by the UNEAC (Union of Writers, Critics and Artits of Cuba) in 2006 and the “Teatro de Madrid” award. Goyo Monteros “Sleeping Beauty” has been awarded “best Italian production of the year 2008” by the dance magazine Danza&Danza.
For the successful start with his new company Goyo Montero has been awarded in 2009 with the cultural prize of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Middle Franconia. In 2010 Goyo Montero received the Harlequin Award for his work. In 2011 Goyo Montero was awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture with the Premio Nacional de Danza.
In 2013 Goyo Montero’s restaging of his choreography “Romeo and Juliet” for Compañia Nacional de Danza has been nominated in dance magazine “Dance for you” as best modern choreography 2012/2013 as well in “Dance Europe” as best revival.
In 2014 Goyo Montero received the Bavarian Culture Award. In 2014 Nuremberg Ballet has been nominated by “Dance Europe” as best company as well as Montero’s “Black Bile” as best choreography. And dancemagazine “Dance for You” awarded Goyo Montero “Choreographer of the Year 2014” for his “outstanding production ‘Black Bile’” in its December issue. In 2015 Magazine "Dane Europe" nominated Goyo Montero's ballet "Cyrano" within the category "Best Premiere" in season 2014/2015. Goyo Montero got again nominated as outstanding choreographer by "Dance for you" within the issue "best of season 2014-2015".
Invited by the Chekhov International Theatre Festival Moscow the Nuremberg Ballet gave a guest performance of Goyo Montero’s “Cinderella” in Moscow in summer 2015. Four sold out and highly acclaimed guest performances at the State Academical Theatre of Mossovet contributed essentially to the development of the company’s international reputation.
