Brennen College is an educational institution in Kerala, affiliated to Kannur University. It is located in Dharmadam, Thalassery of Kerala state, India. The college evolved from a school established by the English philanthropist Edward Brennen, master attendant of the Thalassery Port, who had made Thalassery his home. In December 2004, the government of Kerala bestowed the status of "university" on Brennen College. There are 19 departments in the college, of which 11 offer postgraduate level courses. There are more than 2,762 students, 108 permanent teaching staffs and 51 non teaching staffs. The College has granted special heritage status by UGC in 2016 with an aim of conserving college which is more than 125 years old.
History
Government Brennen College developed out of the free school established in 1862 by Edward Brennen, a master attendant of Tellicherry Port. It was elevated to the status of a II Grade College with F.A. Classes in 1890. The institution became a I Grade College in 1947, and it was shifted to the new building at Darmadam in 1958. Government Brennen College celebrated its century in 1990 . The then Vice President of India, His Excellency Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma inaugurated the centenary celebrations. Missile man of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam was felicitated at the college on 12 October 2012. He planted a mango tree in the college garden which is well protected by NCC troop of the college. Honorable Governor of Kerala P. Sathasivam inaugurated the quasquicentennial celebrations of Govt. Brennen College on August 2015 and the closing ceremony was inaugurated by alumnus Honorable Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan accompanied by Education Minister C. Raveendranath, A. K. Balan and K.K. Ragesh MP
Brennen College is recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Government of Kerala. The University Grants Commission includes the college in 12B and 2F Categories. In 2004 September, the institution was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council at A Grade.
The Brennen College campus is situated in Dharmadam Panchayath on a hillock just 5 km north of Thalassery town and 1 km away from Kannur-Thalassery National Highway. The campus has 16.5 acres (67,000 m2) of land housing the academic departments, administrative office, central library, student hostels, staff quarters, and play ground.
‘Santivanam’ is probably the only conserved pristine forest patch in a college campus in Kerala. The greenhouse beside the new PG Block and the Medicinal Herbs Garden in front of the administrative block also signify the eco-friendly culture of Brennen College.

Research programs
Five departments were approved as research centers under the Kannur University and have full- and part-time research scholars conducting research leading to PhD degrees. Three minor research projects were obtained by the Department of Botany and Philosophy from the UGC.
Brennen Library
Brennen college has a Central Library with Unique collection. The Library has about 21600 books which contained many vary rare and otherwise not available Malayalam books printed during the nineteenth century mainly at Basel Mission Press, Mangalore. The library has prepared an electronic catalogue of these Malayalam publication in 2004. it is the first electronic catalogue in any Indian language with search mechanism in the local script. The library is a unique source for reference for regional studies.[1]
Departments
Malayalam
The department was established in 1890. The department is known for its vibrant cultural activities. Lecturers in the department included literary figures such as poet O. N. V. Kurup, thinker, orator and writer M. N. Vijayan, writer N Prabhakaran , poet S. Joseph, writer B Rajeevan, D Vinayachandran, art critic A T Mohanraj, documentary filmmaker and social activist M A Rahman and writer M Damodaran. The department has conducted several events in association with Kerala Sahitya Akademi and Kerala Folklore Akademi and noted writers from various south Indian languages attended the programmes. The department offers UG and PG courses and is a research centre.
English
The department offers B.A and M.A in English. Writer T Ramachandran was a former lecturer of the department.
Department head is Mr. Sivaji Ramachandran, MA, MBA.
Zoology
The department was established in 1956 bifurcating Natural Science department and offers B.Sc and M.Sc in Zoology. It is one of the oldest and famous department of Govt. Brennen College. There is a well established biology lab for undergraduate students. A well established molecular biology research laboratory is also functioning here under the department.There are six faculty members including two guest lecturers.The department library has more than 3,000 books. There are 90 students in the first year, second year and third year degree courses and 12 in PG.. In 2015-2016, the department has got first rank holder with high CGPA of Kannur University.
Botany
The department offers BSc and MSc programmes
Arabic
The department was established in 1967, offering an undergraduate course in B.A Arabic and Islamic History (Double Main) for three years.
Chemistry
The department was established in 1956. There are two laboratories with facilities to conduct inorganic, organic and physical chemistry experiments. The department library has 3,000 books. There are six faculty members including two guest lecturers. There are 100 students in the first year, second year and third year degree courses. During 2005-06, a student secured second rank in the university level, seven students got distinction mark, 20 students got first class and the overall result was 97%.
Commerce
The department was established in November 1995 and offers B.B.A (Bachelor of Business Administration). The course is three years. There is a one-day industrial visit for the first and second year students. The final year students are given three weeks industrial training in industry. The students prepare a project report based on their training. The students study the production system, management practices, financial aspects and marketing strategy of industrial undertakings.
Economics
The department offers courses in B.A Economics and M.A. Economics. Student intake for B.A Economics is 50 and P.G. 15. The department offers the Ph.D in Economics. The research center has been approved by Kannur University.
Hindi
The department was established in 1890, at the same time as the college. Thereafter, for half a decade, the department was handing second language classes only. It now has both undergraduate and postgraduate classes, as well as a research centre and a seminar hall, the Hindi Parivar.
History
The department's B.A. degree course was started in 1956. An M.A. course in History was introduced in 1960, the first post-graduate course in the college. 180 students are in the three-year B.A course and 40 in the two year M.A course. Of the undergraduate and postgraduate students 20% belong to SC/ST categories, female students contribute 60% of the total strength.
Political Science
The department came into existence in 1956. Till 1999, the department offered Political Science as a subsidiary subject to History, Economics and English Literature. The undergraduate course in Political Science started in 1999. The student intake of the department is 40. The first batch completed their BA course in 2002. Ever since, the department has had more than 90 percentage of passout in the university examinations.
Mathematics
The department started offering undergraduate degree course in Mathematics in 1947. The postgraduate course in Mathematics began in 1979.
The department offers B.Sc. degree course in mathematics with an intake of 40 students and M.Sc. degree course in mathematics for 15 students. The computer lab was partly funded by the alumni association (BOSAM) of the department.
Physical education
The college has produced national and international sports stars.
Sanskrit
The Department of Sanskrit was established in 1890.
