Gold star lesbian

Gold star lesbian is a term used by the LGBT community to describe a lesbian who has never had a romantic or sexual relationship with a man.[1] Use of this term is a point of controversy in the wider LGBT community.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

Definition and scope

The 'gold star' term itself is thought to have originated from such objectification and identity policing within the LGBT community. The term was popularized on shows like The L Word and A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila.[3] The term may also be applied to gay men who have not slept with women.[8][9] Gold stars often use the term in a frivolous way to compliment their sexuality in a pattern of word reclamation and positive use of labels often seen within the LGBT community. Lesbians may use the label to assert their sexuality despite other facets of their identity such as femmeness, disability or religion.
