Gladstone is the resident Chief Mouser of HM Treasury at Whitehall, London. He is a domestic short-haired cat, who, at eighteen months old, assumed the position of Chief Mouser in late June 2016. Gladstone's political namesake is former Chancellor and Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone who served for four separate periods, more than any other Prime Minister. The hope is Gladstone will control mice at the Treasury's 1 Horse Guards Road building.[1]

The inception of the position of Chief Mouser at the Treasury follows the creation of similar positions at Number 10 and the Foreign Office, with those positions being held by Larry and Palmerston, as of July 2016. The decision to introduce an official mouser was taken by John Kingman, former acting Permanent Secretary at the Treasury. The appointment of Gladstone as "Chief Mouser to the Treasury" was officially announced on 29 July 2016.[2]

Gladstone was taken to his new home at the Treasury in late June 2016, but the fallout from the referendum on European Union membership delayed the public announcement until late July.[3]

Life Before the Treasury

Gladstone was brought in by a staff member of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home Lost and Found team in May 2016 as a neglected stray, after trying to get into her cat flap for a few weeks. [4] He had been wandering the streets of London, hungry, and without Microchip implant (animal), meaning his owners could not be located. At Battersea, he was known as Timmy. [5] Like most homeless cats without access to daily food and water, he would eat too much, too quickly. A special activity puzzle feeder remedied this issue. [3]

Work as Chief Mouser

Gladstone may be confined to offices in the Treasury building, but it is said he is confident like he owns the place and not bothered by the activity or meeting new people. Within 48 hours of moving in, he made his first catch. [6] Reportedly, Gladstone appears to have the best mousing record, described as “a cold-blooded killer” registering six catches in his first three months in office. [7] Food and upkeep for Gladstone is taken care of by Treasury staff, who contribute a small amount of funds towards the required items for Gladstone's daily needs. At weekends, the Treasury's facilities and security team look after his domestic needs and personal protection. [8] His employment is at no cost to taxpayers. [9] When Gladstone is not pawing over piles of paperwork, crunching the numbers and running the department, or stalking mice, he can be found in a lovely hammock in his humans’ office close to where his staff keeps the Dreamies.

Recognition as Treasury's Chief Mouser

On July 28, 2017 Gladstone celebrated his one year anniversary at HM Treasury. A few days after his debut on Instagram in July 2016, he had 1,200 followers. [10] 103 picture posts later, currently the number is over 10k. 'A cat's life - After a year in the spotlight, Gladstone sets the record straight', details his life at the Treasury. To date, Gladstone's number of mice caught is 22, and a bonus of two flies. Gladstone is humble about his rags to riches beginnings and is thankful for his staff. [11]

Since Gladstone has a social media presence both on his official Instagram, and a recognized by media outlets as far away as Ireland [12] parody account on Twitter, @TreasuryMog [13],[14] he receives gifts from his many 10.8K adoring fans. Admittedly, his 'thing' is bowties, amassing a collection in different colors, materials, styles and themes - the one w/ red polka-dots being his favorite because it's professional for around the office, AND a fun way to showcase his personality. He often receives trinkets such as cat toys, Christmas baubles from Brazil,[15] a personalized collar, and a Halloween handmade knitted scarf from Australia. [16] He may be internet famous, but wasn't aware of how much so until his debut on the Treasury's official youtube, in 'Where's Gladstone Gone?', for 2016's Open House London,[17] which also appeared on Sky News. In March 2017, Gladstone made London's Time Out (magazine) 'Pet Power List: definitive guide to the political animals of Westminster'. [18]
