Giasuddin Al Mamun is a Bangladeshi businessman and close business parter of Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh nationalist party politician and son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.[1] He faces accusations of corruption in Bangladesh.[2]
Career
Mamun was sued by Bangladesh Anti Corruption Commission of acquiring 1 billion taka beyond his known source of income in May 2007.[1] In 2009 he was sued by Anti corruption commission on charge of laundering 204 milion taka to Singapore.[3] In 2011 FBI agent, Debra Laprevotte, testified against Mamun in court.[4] He was sentenced to seven years in jail and fined 400 milion taka on 17 November 2013 in Dhaka court by Third Special Judge Motahar Hossain. His co-defendant Tarique Rahman was acquitted by the court.[5] Justice Motahar left the country soon after declaring his verdict, which led to speculations of a deal between him and Tarique.[6] The Anti Corruption Commission filed an appeal with the Bangladesh High Court on 5 December 2013.[7] The Bangladesh High Court on 21 July 2016 reduced his fine to 200 milion taka and Tarique Rahman was found guilty in the new verdict.[5] Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain of Bangladesh High Court delivered the verdict.[8]
