History
Immediately after the independence of India, the people of Ghatal established a college at Birsingha, birthplace of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. However, this college, unfortunately, ceased to exist after two years owing to some dim reasons. The situation aggravated and pressed the demand for a college in Ghatal subdivision. To fulfill the aspiration and demand of the people, a number of stalwarts, academicians, and social workers came forward with a view to utilizing extremely the human resources available in the area and established the present College on 14 August 1961, in the name of Rabindranath Tagore in his birth centenary year. In fact, the college was not built by the patronage and donation of a single man or a few people. On the other hand, one can say, without exaggeration, that it was built by the generous help of all people of Ghatal subdivision. At that time, it was affiliated with University of Calcutta. Currently, it is affiliated with Vidyasagar University.
