Gerhard Reinicke (11 April 1914 – 4 July 1997) was a German tank commander and recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross during World War II. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership.
Career
Feldwebel Reinicke especially distinguished himself during one of the toughest days of his battalion, namely 6 July 1941. On that day he attacked a group of Russian artillery and anti-tank positions and was able to destroy an artillery battery as well as two extra guns during the fighting. He further acquitted himself while helping to evacuate wounded comrades of a neighbouring company, being the last man to leave the battlefield. For these deeds, as well as his past distinguished service (he had lost an arm in the battle of France) he was awarded the Knight’s Cross. [1]
