Gemisch
Gemisch is a technical term derived from German and means a composition, conglomerate or mixture of at least two pure substances (binäres Gemisch ~ binary Gemisch). Depending on the aggregate states of the substances there are nine possible combinations of matter:
solid | liquid | aeriform | |
solid | connected on the atomic level: brass | clay | sponge |
visible heterogeneities: marble
separated compounds: gravel
liquid | Solution: Sol | Solution: wine | Solution: soda water |
Suspension: blood | Emulsion: milk (visible micro fat droplets ~ opaqueness) | foam
aeriform | aerosol | gas mixture
smoke, dust | fog |
(Table adopted from the German Wikipedia)
Despite the components of a Gemisch do not chemical react, the behaviour of the Gemisch differs from that of the components. The density of wine for instance exceeds the density of water as well as the density of alcohol. The melting point of a liquid drops if a mineral gets in solution, but the boiling point rises depending form the concentration of the mineral.
