On April 30, 2015, President Obama announced his nomination of Smith to be the new administrator for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), to succeed Dr. Rajiv Shah, who resigned the post in February 2015.[2] There was some opposition to her appointment.[3][4] The Senate delayed confirmation.[5] Smith was later confirmed on November 30, 2015.[6][7]
