Personal life
Gayathrie's family is of Tamil origin and her home town is Bangalore, Karnataka.[1] Her grandfather from Trichy worked as an army officer, while both of her parents work as bankers. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology.
She got her first film offer when she was in 12th class and took it up. She considered acting "just a dream" and stated that she "never really planned on working towards it or taking it seriously as a career."[1] She said that she had stage fright and was afraid of public speaking but that she got over it once she started acting. She has also said that she is "a gypsy at heart" and that she would "have travelled and done something related to psychology" if she hadn't become an actress.[1]

The actress's first release was the psychological thriller 18 Vayasu, but was recognized for her work in Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom alongside Vijay Sethupathi. In 2013 she starred in two films, Ponmaalai Pozhudhu and Mathapoo. She was next seen in Vijay Sethupathi in Rummy, a 1980s college love story, which also featured Iyshwarya Rajesh.[2]
She is currently filming for the multi-starrer Ula,[3][4] in which she plays Priya, "a very normal middle class girl who loves her family" and Mellisai co-starring with Vijay Sethupathi again, in which she will be seen as Meera, a music teacher.[1] Furthermore, her delayed film N. Krishna's Yen Ippadi Mayakkinai alongside Richard is set for release in 2014.
