Gajendra Singh Shekhawat ( Hindi: गजेन्द्र सिंह शेखावत), called Gajju Bana by his followers, born 3 October 1967) is an Indian Politician who is currently serving as Member Of Parliament Lok Sabha. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has won the Indian general elections, 2014 from the Jodhpur (Lok Sabha constituency).[1]
Mr. Shekhawat also handles the position of National General Secretary of the farmers wing of the Bharatiya Janta Party, the BJP Kisan Morcha[2]
Known for his simple life style, Shekhawat is the most followed Indian Politician on Quora.[3]. His Quora profile has more than 50,000 followers and his answers on the social media platform has been viewed a record 5 Million times, more than that of former U.S.A president Barack Obama [4]
Education and Childhood
Born to a distinguished Rajput family with roots in district Sikar in the Indian state of Rajasthan, Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat received his schooling from a host of places because of his father's Mr. Shankar Singh Shekhawat's frequent assignments across the state. His father who was a senior Government officer in the public health department played a major influence on Mr. Shekhawat's upbringing during his childhood days. He has done the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil - Philosophy) and Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Philosophy from Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur Rajasthan. While in school Mr. Shekhawat showed early signs of leadership by engaging in debates and other extracurricular activities. To this day, his debating skills has been a highlight of his long political career. As a testimony of his debating skills, Mr. Shekhawat has been noted as a frequent speaker and debater in the Indian Parliament[5]
Political career
Gajendra Singh Shekhawat started his political career from student politics when he was elected as president of Student union of JNVU University in 1992 under the banner of Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad . Mr. Shekhawat won the elections by the highest margin recorded in the University's history. He had been active with many social and political forums before being elected as Member of Parliament (India) in the 16th Lok Sabha in year 2014 with the historic highest ever winning margin (4,10,051 votes) from Jodhpur (Rajasthan).[6]. One of his major achievement during his tenure as an M.P. has been the expansion of the Jodhpur Airport, a demand that had continuously been raised since the last 18 years.
Before plunging into electoral politics, Mr. Shekhawat held important positions in many important forums and organisations. He was the co-convener of the Swadeshi Jagran Manch, the economic wing of the Sangh Parivar, the General Secretary of Seema Jan Kalyan Samiti, an organisation dedicated to strengthen national security by developing border towns and villages. As the General Secretary, Mr. Shekhawat was instrumental in building a second line of defense that consisted of civilians residing near the border area of Rajasthan. He was also instrumental in furthering the impact of civil defence by setting up 40 schools and 4 hostels along the Indo-Pak border.
As a Member of Parliament he has been consistently ranked as one of the best performing in the Indian Parliament[7]. Apart from his duties as a Member of Parliament, Mr. Shekhawat also shoulders the responsibility of being the Chairperson, Fellowship Committee, Member, All India Council of Sports (AICS), Member, Standing Committee on Finance among other positions.
