Gaana.com is a commercial music streaming service providing free and licensed music. It was launched in April 2010 by Times Internet and provides both Indian and international music content. The entire Indian music catalog is available to users worldwide, but only users in South Asia have access to international music. Gaana.com features music from 21 languages including the major languages such as Hindi, English, Bengali, Odia,Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and other Indian regional languages.

Gaana.com allows users to make their playlists public so that they can be seen by other users.[1] They can view and favorite playlists. Its mobile app was launched to support almost all operating systems.

History

The domain name, Gaana.com, was first registered on 21 June 2005 and was launched in April 2010.

The desktop version of Gaana.com is primarily an HTML5 deployment. However, the music player of the desktop version uses HLS Streaming and Adobe Flash. Its iPad version of the site, completely using HTML5, being the first do so among other things.[2] The two versions contain almost entirely the same features.

Gaana.com formed a partnership in February 2013 with South Indian Music Companies Association to acquire rights to music from 79 different labels. Consequently, Gaana.com had access to more than fifty thousand songs.

Gaana.com was hacked by Pakistani hacker "Mak Man" on the 29th of May, 2015. The details of users of the site were leaked by the hacker.[3]

Micromax, a Smartphone maker bought a stake in Gaana.com in October 2015.[4]
