Franklin Township is a township in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,678 at the 2010 census.[3]
History
Clear Spring Mill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.[4]
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 19.2 square miles (50 km2), of which 19.1 square miles (49 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2), or 0.26%, is water. The township occupies the westernmost corner of York County in south-central Pennsylvania, and it surrounds the borough of Franklintown, located near the eastern corner of the township.
Demographics
As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 4,515 people, 1,704 households, and 1,284 families residing in the township. The population density was 236.0 people per square mile (91.1/km²). There were 1,769 housing units at an average density of 92.5/sq mi (35.7/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98.47% White, 0.18% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.58% of the population.
There were 1,704 households out of which 38.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.7% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.6% were non-families. 20.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the township the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.9 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $49,020, and the median income for a family was $60,313. Males had a median income of $40,431 versus $27,463 for females. The per capita income for the township was $24,322. About 3.5% of families and 5.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.6% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
