Fortress is a computer game written by Mat Newman, developed by Amcon and released by Pace Software on cassette tape for the BBC Micro home computer in 1984. It was based on the SEGA game Zaxxon that had been released in arcades in 1982. The game play was relatively unique to the BBC as it offered the player a 3D isometric perspective which simulated three dimensions from a third-person viewpoint.[1]

Gameplay

Fortress is a simple isometric scrolling shooter that presented the player with a starfighter that they had to manoeuvre both side to side and up and down along an alley-like terrain. The player craft burns fuel rapidly (even more when flying at altitude) and to survive fuel tanks need to be destroyed at regular intervals to replenish the on-board fuel tank - if the tank runs dry the player's craft crashes. Whilst trying to refuel the player must avoid enemy gun turrets, rocket pits and fighters. There were also added problems of navigating over and through walls with force fields. The player has three lives.

Completing the three stages then led to the enemy headquarters that the player had to shoot four times. Completing this saw the player start once again from the beginning.
