Foreign Language Specialized School (Vietnamese: Phổ Thông Chuyên Ngoại Ngữ), commonly known as FLSS or CNN, is a national public magnet high school/university-preparatory school in Hanoi, Vietnam. A part of University of Languages and International Studies - VNU, the school is one of the three national gifted high schools in Hanoi, along with HNUE Gifted High School and Natural Science Gifted High School. Currently, FLSS is Vietnam's only high school specializing in teaching foreign languages (including Chinese Mandarin, English, Russian, French, German, Japanese and Korean).[1] Similar to other national magnet high schools, FLSS is recognized for its strong academic programs and its large percentage (98% to 100%) of graduates attending the most prestigious universities in Vietnam and abroad.[2][3]
FLSS ranks third nationally in the 2012 Vietnam university admission ranking.[4] Admission to FLSS is by competitive examination only, which until 2016 consisted of three subjects: Declared specialized foreign language, mathematics, and literature. The 2017 admission process adopts a more comprehensive approach. There are three parts to the admission exams: one on declared foreign language, one on mathematics and natural science subjects, and one on literature and social science subjects. For the language exams, except for English, others require an interview round beside the written tests. FLSS is the most selective high school in Vietnam with an acceptance rate of 1/9.5 in 2015.[5][6]
A student from FLSS is referred to as a CNNer.[7]
History
- Foreign Language Specialized School was first founded as a program for foreign language specialized high school classes in 1969 by a decision from the head of Ministry of Education and Training with direct administration from VNU University of Languages and International Studies (Formerly College of Foreign Languages) . Student Life
Ten Plus (10+)
Coming back from Asian Young Leaders Convention in Singapore, several students launched the first "Ten Plus"- a freshmen orientation program in 2008 as a gift for the school. This is considered to be the first orientation program ever implemented in Hanoi, with approximately 200 student organizers, 500 new students together with teachers of the school. Annually at the beginning of school year, the orientation program started at 7 a.m. and closed at 10.30 p.m. on the same day. The purpose of the program was to inform new students about the school, student bodies and types of activities all year round. Older student generations will teach them many crucial skills such as teamwork, public speaking skills, independence and how to build confidence. Teachers want students to be able to develop their personality and strengths, while also emerging themselves in the colorful student culture here at Foreign Language Specialized School. When the previous Ten Plus generation have already become familiar with the school, they themselves can have the chance of becoming the new guides ( more commonly referred to as Orientation Group Leaders or OGL ) for the next freshmen year. Freshmen can truly feel comfortable learning and making progress at their new school and students from different academic years can develop strong solidarity.
CNN Can Cook
CNN Can Cook is an annual cooking and flower arrangement competition between male students celebrating International Women's Day, hosted by CNN Shine, the volunteer club. Literature Work Adaptation
Every year in the literature class, students are required to bring to life a chosen literature work through any medium and in any format desired. This method of teaching literature received praise for its ability to integrate students' unlimited creativity and teamwork into their process of understanding the literary value. From an activity in class, this soon became a memorable part of CNNers' experience. In 2012, to mark the 10th anniversary of the teaching method, FLSS organized a grand event and competition in which students' performance featured a wide range of Vietnamese literature and the world's classics.
English Speaking Contest
This annual event is usually organized by the school's department of English and CNN English Club (CEC). It attracts a number of 10th and 11th graders participating in the contest. Exchange programs
Every year, the school organizes overseas exchange programs for the students who wish to experience the cultures and languages that they are pursuing.
