Foreign Language Specialized School (Vietnamese: Phổ Thông Chuyên Ngoại Ngữ), commonly known as FLSS or CNN, is a national public magnet high school/university-preparatory school in Hanoi, Vietnam. A part of University of Languages and International Studies - VNU, the school is one of the three national gifted high schools in Hanoi, along with HNUE Gifted High School and Natural Science Gifted High School. Currently, FLSS is Vietnam's only high school specializing in teaching foreign languages (including Chinese Mandarin, English, Russian, French, German, Japanese and Korean).[1] Similar to other national magnet high schools, FLSS is recognized for its strong academic programs and its large percentage (98% to 100%) of graduates attending the most prestigious universities in Vietnam and abroad.[2][3]

FLSS ranks third nationally in the 2012 Vietnam university admission ranking.[4] Admission to FLSS is by competitive examination only, which until 2016 consisted of three subjects: Declared specialized foreign language, mathematics, and literature. The 2017 admission process adopts a more comprehensive approach. There are three parts to the admission exams: one on declared foreign language, one on mathematics and natural science subjects, and one on literature and social science subjects. For the language exams, except for English, others require an interview round beside the written tests. FLSS is the most selective high school in Vietnam with an acceptance rate of 1/9.5 in 2015.[5][6]

A student from FLSS is referred to as a CNNer.[7]

Curriculum

The school offers seven foreign languages in its curriculum. Russian, English and Mandarin Chinese were its three initial linguistic subjects before 1980-1981 semester. French, German,Japanese and Korean were added afterward respectively. Students are arranged into classes specializing in one primary foreign language. Since the academic year of 2008-2009, two foreign language courses (one specialized and one elective) have been required for every FLSS student. Since the academic year of 2009-2010, FLSS has implemented teaching Maths through English [9] During the year 2015, Korean was added as the seventh language.

Student Life

Ten Plus (10+)

Coming back from Asian Young Leaders Convention in Singapore, several students launched the first "Ten Plus"- a freshmen orientation program in 2008 as a gift for the school. This is considered to be the first orientation program ever implemented in Hanoi, with approximately 200 student organizers, 500 new students together with teachers of the school. Annually at the beginning of school year, the orientation program started at 7 a.m. and closed at 10.30 p.m. on the same day. The purpose of the program was to inform new students about the school, student bodies and types of activities all year round. Older student generations will teach them many crucial skills such as teamwork, public speaking skills, independence and how to build confidence. Teachers want students to be able to develop their personality and strengths, while also emerging themselves in the colorful student culture here at Foreign Language Specialized School. When the previous Ten Plus generation have already become familiar with the school, they themselves can have the chance of becoming the new guides ( more commonly referred to as Orientation Group Leaders or OGL ) for the next freshmen year. Freshmen can truly feel comfortable learning and making progress at their new school and students from different academic years can develop strong solidarity.

CNN Can Cook

CNN Can Cook is an annual cooking and flower arrangement competition between male students celebrating International Women's Day, hosted by CNN Shine, the volunteer club. The contest served as an educational playground for students, helping them to build up creativity and activeness. It was also the opportunity for students to express their talent, and learn from their teachers and school mates.

CNN's Colors

Formerly known as Sound Festival (Dạ hội Tiếng), "CNN's Colors" is an annual cultural show performed by CNNers. Students from all the classes (mainly 10 and 11th graders) have a chance to show their talents and introduce the cultures of the native countries whose languages they specialize in to their teachers, classmates, parents and other audiences. The activity lasts for a night and some selected teachers act as judges to evaluate the performances of each individual class. This is one of the biggest events in the school year when students' creativity truly blossoms.

Natural Sciences Fair

An annual activity for CNNer to help students enhance their passion and excitement in basic science subjects at school.

Spring Sports Festival

An annual competition among all students with the view of reminding students to train and exercise their bodies to be in the best health conditions. Literature Work Adaptation

Every year in the literature class, students are required to bring to life a chosen literature work through any medium and in any format desired. This method of teaching literature received praise for its ability to integrate students' unlimited creativity and teamwork into their process of understanding the literary value. From an activity in class, this soon became a memorable part of CNNers' experience. In 2012, to mark the 10th anniversary of the teaching method, FLSS organized a grand event and competition in which students' performance featured a wide range of Vietnamese literature and the world's classics.

English Speaking Contest

This annual event is usually organized by the school's department of English and CNN English Club (CEC). It attracts a number of 10th and 11th graders participating in the contest. The contestants are supposed to experience the three rounds which take place during September and early October. The contest aims at creating an opportunity for the students to learn, share, and improve their English ability and some soft skills like debating, critical thinking, problem-solving, public speaking.

Russian-French-Chinese-German-Japanese Speech Contest

This contest is held annually by the Department of Russian, French, Chinese Mandarin, German and Japanese in every January. It provides the students majoring in those languages with a chance to show their language proficiency and enhance their public speaking skill, debating skill, and motivation in their language study as well.

Exchange programs

Every year, the school organizes overseas exchange programs for the students who wish to experience the cultures and languages that they are pursuing. These programs are fully or half sponsored financially by FLSS's partner schools (like Albrecht-Thaer-Gymnasium (Hamburg, Germany), Kobe University Secondary school (Kobe, Japan), Guangdong Overseas Chinese High School, etc.). They usually take place during the school year or summer holidays.
