Fole is a settlement on the Swedish island of Gotland. Formerly a socken,[2] on 1 January 2016, it was reconstituted into the administrative area Fole District.[3]

Geography

Fole is the name of the socken, now district. It is also the name of the small village surrounding the medieval Fole Church,[4] sometimes referred to as Fole kyrkby. It is situated in the central northern part of Gotland.[5]

One of the asteroids in the Asteroid belt, 10129 Fole, is named after this place.[6]

Parish

Fole Church is a 13th-century edifice mixing Romanesque and Gothic elements. Fole is a part of Väskinde parish.[7] Fole Idrottsförening ("Fole Sports Club") is one of the oldest on Gotland, founded in 1894.[8] A number of gold bracteates and other Viking Age jewelry has been found at Fole.[9]

Farms

Fole consist of a number of farms over a larger area.[10]
