Filipe Augusto Carvalho Souza (born 12 August 1993), commonly known as Filipe Augusto, is a Brazilian footballer who plays for Portuguese club S.L. Benfica as a defensive midfielder.

Club career

Bahia

Born in Itambé, Bahia, Filipe Augusto joined Esporte Clube Bahia's youth setup in 2009, aged 16. He was promoted to the first team in 2012 by manager Paulo Roberto Falcão, and renewed his contract with the club in February 2012 until 2014.[1]

Filipe Augusto made his professional debut on 29 February 2012, coming on as a substitute for Magno Cruz in a 5–1 home win against Camaçari Futebol Clube for the Campeonato Baiano championship.[2] He appeared in two further games during the tournament, as the Tricolor were crowned champions.

Rio Ave

On 18 June 2012, Filipe Augusto signed with Primeira Liga side Rio Ave F.C. for five years and a €2.2 million fee.[3] He made his competitive debut on 18 August, starting in a 0–1 home loss against C.S. Marítimo; his first match in the UEFA Europa League occurred on 31 July 2014, when he featured 75 minutes in a 1–0 away success over IFK Göteborg for the third qualifying round.[4]

On 1 September 2014, Filipe Augusto moved to Valencia CF from Spain in a season-long loan deal, moving alongside manager Nuno Espírito Santo.[5] His maiden La Liga appearance took place 21 days later, in a 3–0 win at Getafe CF where he replaced Daniel Parejo in the 80th minute.[6] During his spell at the Mestalla Stadium, he was very rarely played.[7]

For 2015–16, Filipe Augusto joined S.C. Braga in the Portuguese top division, still owned by Rio Ave.[8] In October/November 2015 he scored rare goals (both from penalty kicks) to help oust Segunda Liga teams Académico de Viseu FC (3–0 away win)[9] and S.C. Farense (1–0, also away) from the Taça de Portugal;[10] in late April 2016, however, he suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for the rest of the campaign.[11]

Benfica

On the very last day of the 2017 January transfer window, Felipe Augusto signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Portuguese champions S.L. Benfica.[12]

International career

In 2012, Filipe Augusto appeared with the Brazil under-20s in the 2012 Eight Nations Cup.[13] He was also named in a provisional 27-men squad for the 2013 South American Youth Championship,[14] but was one of four players cut from the final list.
