Farol de Ponta Norte (the Ponta Norte Lighthouse, Portuguese: literally North Point Lighthouse or the North Point of Sal), also as farol de Reguinho Fiúra is a lighthouse in the northernmost point of the island of Sal in northeastern Cape Verde, it is located near the area of Ponta do Norte, Reguinho Fiúra and are linked with only dirt roads. The northernmost area of the island remains unpopulated. Several small portions of areas have recently partly been mined for salt and other materials.
History
The original lighthouse was first constructed in 1897 with a tower made out of iron, it was 13 meters high with an attached section in the viewing part.[3]
A new lighthouse was constructed in early 1941,[4] today they are in ruins, it consisted a white cylindrical tower made out of parallelepipedic volume of 4x4 meters, both done by masonry, its height was 11 meters.[3] It was built using a patented "MURUS material system" by author of the engineer of the Portuguese inventor Raul Pires Ferreira Chaves.[5]
The today's lighthouse has a modern steel column 5 meters in height.
