Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague
The Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) is one of the three faculties of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (alongside the Film and TV school and the Music Faculty). It was founded immediately after the Second World War. It was established in 1945 as part of the newly created arts university.[1] Teachers at the faculty have included prominent personalities of modern Czech theatre including Otomar Krejča, set designer František Tröster, Ivan Vyskočil, director Jiří Frejka, and Miroslav Haller. DAMU is a member of the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) and the European Network of Cultural Administration Training Centres (ENCATC).
Departments
The two largest departments of the school are:
- the Department of Dramatic Theatre, preparing students for the repertory theatre system and focusing on the interpretation of classical and contemporary texts
- the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre, including a sub-department devoted to scenography, the Division of Alternative Stage Design

- the Department of Authorial Creation and Pedagogy, focusing on performance, including an improvisational acting discipline developed by Professor Ivan Vyskočil, "Acting with the Inner Partner".
- the Department of Drama in Education, focusing on the role of theatre in education
- the Department of Theory and Criticism, focusing on theatre criticism and theoretical subjects
- the Department of Arts Management, focusing on theatre management
Recently, the Theatre Faculty has introduced doctoral studies in four areas:
- Stage Creation and the Theory of Stage Creation
- Theory and Practice of Theatre Creation
- Alternative and Puppet Art and Its Theory
- Authorial Acting and the Theory of Authorial Creation and Pedagogy
