Battle Tendency (Japanese: 戦闘潮流, Hepburn: Sentō Chōryū) is the second story arc of the manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1987 to 1989 for 69 chapters, which were later collected into seven tankōbon volumes. The arc was preceded by Phantom Blood (1987) and followed by Stardust Crusaders (1989–1992).

In 2012, Battle Tendency was digitally colored and released as digital downloads for smartphones and tablet computers. A four-volume hardcover re-release under the title JoJonium (ジョジョニウム, Jojoniumu) was published between February 4 and May 2, 2014.[1] This version was licensed and released in North America by Viz Media; beginning digitally in March 2015 and in print in November 2015.[2]

In its original publication, it was referred to as JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 2 Joseph Joestar: His Proud Lineage (ジョジョの奇妙な冒険 第二部 ジョセフ・ジョースター ―その誇り高き血統, JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken Dai Ni Bu Josefu Jōsutā Sono Hokoritakaki Kettō). Battle Tendency was adapted in the 2012 anime television adaptation by David Production between December 7, 2012 and April 5, 2013.

Synopsis

In 1938, Joseph Joestar, grandson of Jonathan Joestar, discovers his "uncle" Robert E. O. Speedwagon is being held captive in Mexico by a group of Nazi scientists under the command of Major Rudol von Stroheim in a facility studying the vampire-creating Stone Masks and a being known as a "Pillar Man" who is believed to be the Stone Mask's creator. After saving everyone from the awoken Pillar Man Santana with his wits and latent abilities to use the martial art known as the Hamon, Joseph is warned by Stroheim that his people have discovered three other Pillar Men in Italy. He teams up with fellow Hamon user Caesar Zeppeli, the grandson of Jonathan's ally Will A. Zeppeli, yet fails to prevent the resurrection of the Pillar Men Wamuu, Esidisi, and Kars. Joseph manages to convince the Pillar Men to allow him to master Hamon to become a worthy opponent, having poison-filled rings implanted in him with a challenge to defeat them within a month to receive the obtains the antidote. Caesar takes Joseph to meet his teacher, the mysterious lady Lisa Lisa who is the last master of the Hamon on Earth and as such protects a gemstone called the Red Stone of Aja (エイジャの赤石, Eija no Sekiseki) from falling into the hands of the Pillar Men, as they need the gem to become perfectly immortal.

Joseph trains under the woman, eventually killing Esidisi after the Pillar Man kills one of Lisa Lisa's disciples who was to administer a final test to Joseph. After saving Lisa Lisa's assistant Suzi Q from Esidisi's latent control, the group tracks down Kars and Wamuu to Switzerland and cross paths with Stroheim who has since become a cyborg after the injuries he sustained in the fight with Santana. Caesar tries to fight Wamuu one-on-one and only manages to take the antidote for Joseph at the cost of his life. Joseph and Lisa Lisa then confront Kars and Wamuu and duel over ownership of the Red Stone of Aja. Though Joseph manages to defeat Wamuu in battle, Kars takes the Red Stone from Lisa Lisa and uses it with the ultraviolet lamps provided by Stroheim and his men to evolve into a god-like being immune to sunlight and the Hamon. Joseph tries to stop him, chasing him into an active volcano, only to lose his left hand. Just as Kars is to land the death blow, Joseph blocks it with his other hand, holding the Red Stone of Aja, which sends both of them flying into the stratosphere. Kars plans an escape, but Joseph distracts him long enough that he is struck by volcanic rocks and sent into space to drift for eternity.

Everyone believes Joseph has died saving the world, but he shows up at his own funeral with his new wife Suzi Q (who forgot to send a telegram letting everyone know he survived) at his side, and everyone seemingly lives happy new peaceful lives. Such peace lasts until 1987, when an aged Joseph makes an emergency trip to visit his daughter (who had moved to Japan), kicking off the events of "Stardust Crusaders".

Joseph is the main protagonist of Battle Tendency and is the grandson of Phantom Blood protagonist Jonathan Joestar. Having been brought up by his grandmother Erina and Speedwagon, he developed a coarser and more rebellious attitude than that of his gentlemanly grandfather, but he still has a noble heart. Like his grandfather, he can use the Hamon, though he is not initially as skilled in its use as Jonathan was. He initially uses a pair of Hamon-empowered clackers in battle, but he relies more on his wits than brute strength in fights, employing his uncanny ability to predict his opponent's actions down to what they say. He returns as a main character in Stardust Crusaders and as a supporting character in Diamond Is Unbreakable.
Araki revealed that Joseph looks so much like Jonathan because at the time it was "unprecedented" for a main character to die in a Weekly Shōnen Jump manga, so he gave Joseph a different personality instead. He later expressed regret at not altering his appearance just a little more. Wanting to shift from the physical battles in Part 1 to more "cerebral" battles, he made Joseph more adventurous and confrontational compared to the gentlemanly Jonathan. Araki referred to Joseph as "a muscle-bound B.T.", the main character from his earlier series Cool Shock B.T.; a shōnen manga hero who bends the rules as he fights.[4]
Smokey Brown (スモーキー・ブラウン, Sumōkī Buraun)

A young African-American boy living in New York City who pickpockets Joseph, but Joseph saves him from a pair of racist cops and they become friends. After the end of Battle Tendency, Smokey attends college and studies political science, ultimately becoming the first African-American mayor of his hometown in Georgia.
Erina Joestar (エリナ・ジョースター, Erina Jōsutā)

Joseph's grandmother and the widow of Jonathan Joestar. She was believed to be Joseph's last living relative, until he discovers the whereabouts of his mother.
Robert E. O. Speedwagon (ロバート・E・O・スピードワゴン, Robāto Ī Ō Supīdowagon)

An ally of Joseph, and an old friend of the Joestars. Since the events of Phantom Blood, Speedwagon settled in America where he became an oil tycoon and founded the Speedwagon Foundation in order to deal with paranormal threats such as the Stone Mask and, later, the Pillar Men.
Rudol von Stroheim (ルドル・フォン・シュトロハイム, Rudoru Fon Shutorohaimu)

Commander of the Nazi forces who discovered Santviento in Mexico. He is responsible for not only saving the life of Speedwagon, but also for trying to help Joseph defeat Santviento by blowing himself up. He returns later as a cyborg to assist in the fight against Kars, who slices him to pieces. He is rebuilt and leads an army to help Joseph in the fight against Kars and his vampire forces, having been given ultraviolet lamps to stop them. After the end of Battle Tendency, Stroheim dies in 1943 on the front-line during the Battle of Stalingrad.
Caesar Anthonio Zeppeli (シーザー・アントニオ・ツェペリ, Shīzā Antonio Tseperi)
Voiced by: Takuya Satō (Japanese); Bryce Papenbrook (English)
A suave ladies' man and the grandson of Jonathan Joestar's Hamon teacher Will A. Zeppeli. He is rather cool and collected, especially compared to Joseph, with whom he is grudgingly paired to fight the Pillar Men. But over time, Joseph starts to grow on him so much that he is able to understand his strange thought patterns and they form an unbeatable duo. He infuses the Hamon into soap bubbles he creates with his specially-made gloves. Caesar dies in his fight against Wamuu, but not before he can steal Wamuu's antidote for Joseph.
Having not been able to show a friendly rivalry between Jonathan and Dio in Part 1, Araki introduced Caesar to portray friendship in a positive light with Joseph. Wanting each user to have a different type of Hamon with a unique design and hating when a character receives some unbeatable new weapon that makes it obvious they will win, he gave Caesar the seemingly fleeting-bubbles as a "representation of his fate and the burden he is carrying." He enjoys giving characters weapons with faults and having them make up for it with strategy. The author stated that these "spheres" were inherited by both Gyro Zeppeli in Steel Ball Run and Josuke Higashikata in JoJolion.[5]
Lisa Lisa (リサリサ, Risarisa)

A mysterious lady Hamon master and Caesar's Hamon teacher who lives in Venice. She is the last surviving master of the Hamon and as such possesses the Super Aja (スーパーエイジャ, Sūpā Eija), a perfectly cut Red Stone of Aja which she guards from the Pillar Men. She is revealed to be Joseph's mother Elizabeth (エリザベス, Erizabesu), who went into hiding after killing her husband's murderer, a zombie loyal to Dio who infiltrated the Royal Air Force. She is gravely wounded in her fight with Kars, but manages to survive. At the end of Battle Tendency, she moves to America and remarries. Lisa Lisa fights with the Hamon by conducting it through her specially made scarf. Because of her Hamon abilities, she's physically younger than her actual calendar age, looking to be in her mid 20s when she's in actuality in her 50s.
Araki stated that at the time female characters in shōnen manga were typically cute and designed to be "a man's ideal woman," which made the warrior-type Lisa Lisa feel fresh and "unheard of" in both manga and society in general. To contrast with her Part 1 counterpart, the gentle Will A. Zeppeli, he made Lisa Lisa "sadistic", inspired by a neighborhood girl he knew as a child.[6]

Pillar Men

The Pillar Men (柱の男, Hashira no Otoko) are the main antagonists of Battle Tendency. They are members of an ancient race of humanoids that had extraordinary strength, intelligence, and lifespan. They once ruled the Earth, draining the life energy of other living creatures, which led humans to see them as gods and demons. Kars sought to unlock his race's true potential with the Stone Mask, which had a side effect of turning humans into vampires, and a Red Stone of Aja, making them immune to their only weaknesses: sunlight and Hamon. However, his people saw he was a danger to the world and rose up against him, leading Kars and Esidisi to obliterate their clan, except for the children Wamuu and Santviento. While Santviento remained in the new world, the other Pillar Men traveled to Eurasia to find a compatible Red Stone while developing fighting styles to counter the Hamon users they faced. The four eventually entered a two-thousand year hibernation in stone pillars, waiting until the discovery of the Super Aja in order to achieve their goals of total immortality. Despite their bloodthirsty nature, they are all chivalrous warriors, and only truly fight Hamon users in fair fights. Each has total control over their body, able to transform it to suit their needs while able to digest non-Hamon users via physical contact. But Kars, Esidisi, and Wamuu, from their experience with Hamon users, have honed unique specialties called Modes (流法（モード）, Mōdo) to combat them.

Having The Pillar Men aim to be the "Ultimate Beings" Araki had to up the ante compared to Dio, therefore modeled them after Roman statues, Egyptian sphinxes and Japanese nio statues to give them godlike features. Kars wears a turban to show his superior intelligence and that he is their king.[7]

Santviento (サンタナ, Santana)

Santviento is discovered in a Mexican pyramid in 1938 by Straizo's Speedwagon Foundation team and then taken by the Nazi forces under Stroheim for live human experiments to see if he can be used to power the German army, even using a Stone Mask vampire on him to see how much more powerful he is. Santviento escapes, as he can contort his body to escape through a ventilation shaft, and shows he has mastered human language and the mechanisms of the Germans' weaponry when he manages to withstand their attacks. Joseph and Stroheim manage to stop him by escaping to the outside, as Joseph traps him in a well at high noon, turning him back to stone. His remains are taken to a Speedwagon Foundation laboratory while permanently exposed to ultraviolet lamps to trap him.
Esidisi (エシディシ, Eshidishi)

Esidisi has an erratic temper, quick to sob uncontrollably and just as quick to calm himself down, having placed a ring made of poison inside Joseph's neck during their first meeting. His Mode is the Heat Control Mode (怪焔王の流法（モード）, Kaiennō no Mōdo), which allows him to make boil his blood to 500 °C (932 °F), which he injects into his foes to burn them alive by extending his needle-like blood vessels out of his own body. Esidisi's search for the Super Aja leads him to Venice, where he faces Joseph after murdering Loggins. Claiming to have intimate knowledge of The Art of War as he was in China during the lifetime of Sun Tzu, Esidisi matched Joseph's own quick wits in a battle of deception. But Joseph takes advantage of Esidisi's lack of knowledge of sleight of hand to defeat him with a Hamon attack via a cut and restore rope trick, destroying Esidisi's body and retrieving the Pillar Man's antidote. But Esidisi survived yet was reduced to a disembodied nervous system, possessing the body of Suzi Q to get her to mail the Super Aja to Kars and then plans to destroy her from the inside with her heated blood killing the Hamon users. But Joseph and Caesar's contrasting Hamon abilities force Esidisi out of Suzi Q's body, which resulted in the weakened Pillar Man's permanent death when exposed to the sunlight.
Wamuu (ワムウ, Wamū)

Wamuu is Esidisi and Kars' loyal servant, who is a strong and honorable warrior, but reflexively attacks anyone who steps on his own shadow. His Wind Mode (風の流法（モード）, Kaze no Mōdo) allows him to control the air in his lungs, turning it into a powerful wind at his disposal, from using it like a razor sharp blade to rendering him invisible. He spares Joseph's life after the young man wounded him, allowing him a month's reprieve to master Hamon while placing a poison ring in his heart as added incentive while revealing the antidote in his lip piercing. His next fight is against Caesar, who manages to hold his own, but cannot defeat Wamuu's Wind Mode. He fatally wounds Caesar, allowing the dying man to obtain the antidote out of respect for the human's valiant effort. Wamuu later faces off against Joseph in a deadly chariot race, blinding himself to regain a psychological advantage over his opponent, before was defeated by Joseph's wits and Hamon mastery. As Wamuu's disembodied head lays dying, Joseph eases the Pillar Man's passing by giving him drops of his own blood. Wamuu returns the favor by killing off a horde of vampires that attempted to kill Joseph in revenge, asking Joseph to take the antidote to give him peace of mind while expressing gratitude of facing such a worthy opponent.
Kars (カーズ, Kāzu)
Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue (Japanese); Will Barrett (English)
Kars is the leader of the Pillar Men and the creator of the Stone Masks. He is intelligent and ruthless, and single minded in his dedication to Ultimate Thing (究極生命体（アルティメット・シイング）, Arutimetto Shiingu, "Ultimate Being" in English localizations). This led to Kars wiping out his own people when they deemed his intention as sheer madness. Later facing Hamon users in his quest for a Super Aja stone to perfect the mask's use for his kind, Kars developed a Light Mode (光の流法（モード）, Hikari no Mōdo), which allows him to produce saw-bladed appendages from his body which produce a radiant glow. Unlike his subordinates, Kars has no honor whatsoever and intends to fulfill his goals any means. Kars finally succeeds in getting the stone by deceiving Lisa Lisa during their match with vampire decoy and then tricking the Nazis into exposing him to ultraviolet rays while wearing the Aja-embedded stone mask. Once evolved, now immune to sunlight and able to tap into his own genetic structure, Kars can produce animals loyal to him with the animals themselves also harboring murderous urges, undergo reactive evolutionary mutations, and utilize Hamon. But Kars is defeated as a result of his own hubris, using a Hamon attack on Joseph, who uses the Super Aja to intercept the attack, in a volcano. The resulting eruption blasts Kars into the vacuum of space, causing his immortal body to freeze before his mind shuts down.
Araki made Kars' Brilliant Bone Blade ability a Light Mode technique because he wanted to convey that it was godlike and impossible to beat him. He suspected that the technique also reminded readers of the Reskiniharden Saber Phenomenon from his earlier series Baoh. Although not strictly scientific development like in Baoh, Kars' aim to top the evolutionary chain has a similar feel.[7]

Straizo (ストレイツォ, Sutoreitso)

After Phantom Blood, Straizo replaced Tonpetty as the lama of the Hamon users. After finding a new Stone Mask in Mexico, he decides that he has lived enough of a life of piety to receive nothing in return and activates one of the Stone Masks, becoming a vampire. He then hunts down Jonathan's grandson Joseph so no one in the world can possibly kill him, but Joseph's different fighting strategies ultimately cause Straizo's downfall. He activates his final Hamon to kill himself, but not before he reveals the existence of the Pillar Men to Joseph.
Messina (メッシーナ, Messhīna) and Loggins (ロギンズ, Roginzu)
Voiced by: Hidetoshi Nakamura (Messina) and Yutaka Nakano (Loggins) (Japanese); Geoffery Chalmers (Messina) and Ray Chase (Loggins) (English)
Lisa Lisa's disciples and servants. They train Joseph and Caesar and give the two their final test. While Caesar successfully defeats Messina, Joseph discovers Loggins has been murdered by Esidisi, who Joseph fights instead.
Suzi Q (スージーQ, Sūjī Kyū)

Lisa Lisa's personal assistant who is ditzy and forgetful. She is possessed by Esidisi and is forced to attack the others, but Caesar and Joseph manage to use the Hamon to save her. She becomes Joseph's wife, and the two have a daughter, Holly.
Wired Beck (鋼線（ワイアード）のベック, Waiādo no Bekku)

A vampire created by Kars who can grow spikes from his body. He attacks Joseph and Lisa Lisa, but she quickly defeats him with her scarf.
George Joestar II (ジョージ・ジョースターII世, Jōji Jōsutā Nisei)
Jonathan and Erina's son, Lisa Lisa's husband, and Joseph's father. After being raised by his widowed mother Erina, he fell in love with Lisa Lisa and wed, having one child together. He joined the Royal Air Force as a fighter pilot during the Great War, but his superior was one of Dio's zombie lackeys who killed George II, who was defenseless without the Hamon.
Donovan (ドノヴァン, Donovuan)
Voiced by: Ken'ichirō Matsuda (Japanese); Ray Chase (English)
Donovan is a Nazi commando sent to track and kill Joseph before he can make it to the Nazi laboratory in Mexico. He reveals the Nazis have been spying on Joseph, and Straizo, for some time, and holds his own in battle against Joseph until Joseph tricks Donovan into slamming into a cactus. In the English localization, his name is Donobang.
Mark (マルク, Maruku)
Voiced by: Ryōta Ōsaka (Japanese); Kyle McCarley (English)
Mark is a low-ranking Nazi soldier who is Caesar's best friend. He has a happy outlook on life and wants to go back home to marry his sweetheart. Mark serves as Caesar's, Joseph's, and Speedwagon's chauffeur in Rome, bringing them to the site of the Pillar Men's burial. He is killed when Wamuu steps right through him, dissolving most of his body. Caesar tearfully uses the Hamon to end Mark's suffering, which spurs him to kill the Pillar Men.
Mario Zeppeli (マリオ・ツェペリ, Mario Tseperi)
Voiced by: Jin Yamanoi (Japanese); Doug Stone (English)
Will's son and Caesar's father, Mario left home to investigate the Pillar Men, earning the ire of Caesar. However, when Caesar nearly falls victim to a trap laid by the Pillar Men in their burial, Mario pushes him out of the way, saving him, and restoring his faith in his father.

In 1938 New York, a young pick pickpocket named Smoky Brown was saved from a pair of dirty cops by a young Englishman who introduced himself as Joseph Joestar and had came to New York with his grandmother Erina Joestar. During a meal at a restaurant, Joseph learns that his grandfather's friend Robert E. O. Speedwagon, having become a wealthy oil tycoon, was apparently murdered by a Hamon master named Straizo while investigating a matter concerning the Stone Mask. When Joseph encountered the vampirized Straizo and defeats him, eventually learning that Speedwagon is alive but is held in Mexico by a German militant group under Rudol von Stroheim who is interested in the being that Speedwagon's group found: The Pillar Man. Named Satana by Stroheim once revived, the Pillar Man reveals his ability to absorb organic matter and alter his physical structure to escape while killing Stroheim's men by mimicking their gunfire with the bullets they tried to shoot him with. Joseph, who had managed to sneak into the base, reveals himself and stands against Santana.

As Joseph begins to fight Santana, he notes that his Hamon is protecting him from absorbed by the Pillar Man's attacks before utilizing an attack to lower Satana's guard to rip his body apart with Hamon. Despite a regenerating Satana's attempt to stop them, Joseph and Stroheim succeed to bring the Pillar Man into daylight at the cost of the latter's life. Joseph than defeats Santana by using his last ditch to use the reflected noon sun in the well against the Pillar Man. With Satana's petrified remains stored in the Speedwagon Foundation, having learned there are three more Pillar Men in Rome, Speedwagon takes Joseph to Italy where they meets up with Will Zeppeli's grandson, Caesar Zeppeli. After a brief confrontation, Joseph's group arrive to the Pillar Men's chamber under the Colosseum where they learned the Pillar Men have awakened. Caesar engages the Pillar Man Wamuu, only to be easily defeated before Joseph take over the fight as he proclaimed that he has developed his own special Hamon technique using a pair of clackers that he channels Hamon through.

Indulging Joseph to one minute to defeat him, Wamuu slices his wrist to use the human's blood as a timer. But Joseph lures Wamuu away from the others, playing on the Pillar Man's warrior conduct to give him a month of Hamon training for a more ideal fight. Wamuu accepts, implanting a "Wedding Ring" on Joseph's aorta that will release a deadly poison in 33 days' time, unless Joseph can get the antidote held in his lip piercing by killing him in battle. Esidisi also decides to enter in on the wager and placed his own poisoned ring around Joseph's windpipe, with the antidote in his own nose piercing. The Pillar Man take their leave to find Red Stone of Aja, Caesar taking Joseph to Venice to be trained by his mentor Lisa Lisa who reveals the Pillar Men's leader Kars as the creator of the Stone Masks. She also reveals the Pillar Men seek a perfectly cut Red Stone of Aja known as the Super Aja she possesses to evolve into ultimate lifeforms. With a week left before rings inside Joseph dissolve and kill him, Lisa Lisa pits JoJo and Caesar against Loggins and Messina respectively for their final lesson. But when Joseph reaches his destination, he finds Loggins has already been killed by Esidisi who has come for the Super Aja with Joseph proceeding to face him.

Though Joseph servers Esidici's arm, caught off guard by his opponent's crying, the Pillar Man assimilates Loggins's arm while revealing his ability to control the temperature of his burning blood. Despite nearly falling for a trap himself, Joseph manages to ensnare Esidisi in Hamon-conductive wool thread and hits him with the Hamon, managing to destroy him and retrieve his antidote, safely dissolving the ring around his neck. However, Joseph was unaware that Esidici's nervous system survived as it took over the body of Lisa Lisa's aide Suzie Q and secretly mailed the Super Aja to St. Moritz in Swizterland. Once Suzie Q was saved and the bodiless Pillar Man finally destroyed, the group head to Swizterland where they find the Super Aja intercepted by the Germans under Stroheim, who became a cyborg since the Mexico incident. When Kars comes for the Super Aja, it turns into a death race to get the stone before it slides off a cliff.

After being dragged by Kars into a death drop, Joseph manages to escape certain death by chaining a series of icicles together. The next day, Caesar and the others discuss ambushing an abandoned hotel that they believe is Kars' hideout before Wamuu returns. But a conflict over the ideal course to take leads to Joseph infuriating Caesar as he decides to go after Kars himself, with Lisa Lisa revealing to Joseph the events that led Caesar to become a Hamon user. As Caesar arrives at the hotel, he is attacked by Wamuu, who utilizes streams of moist air to both protect him from the sunlight while appearing ghostly. Taking their battle inside, Caesar unveils his new Bubble Cutter to redirect the sunlight inside the hotel to pin down Wamuu. But Wamuu takes advantage of the split-second the sun is blotted by Caesar to land a fatal injury, allowing his opponent to take his lip ring before he places it in a Hamon bubble before being crushed by debris. Finding the ring, Joseph vows to take it once Wamuu is defeated out of respect for Caesar. After a brief encounter with one of the vampires Kars created, Joseph and Lisa Lisa find themselves vastly outnumbered with the latter outwitting the Pillar Men into a contest for the Super Aja on the line.

After getting the Super Aja, Joseph reaches the arena and confronts the photo he found of Erina with an infant while surrounded by Speedwagon and Straizo. Lisa Lisa reveals that she was the baby that Erina rescued from the ship that fateful day 50 years ago, raised by Straizo to become his successor to the Super Aja. Joseph and Wamuu's battle is revealed to be a chariot race using vampire horses and that they can help themselves to a weapon during each lap, there will be a different weapon for whoever can grab it from a pillar first. Eventually, though brains and brawn, Josephs win the fight and eases the dying Wamuu's pain by spilling a bit of his blood on him. Upon Wamuu's request, Joseph drinks the antidote from his ring, allowing Wamuu to pass away with no regrets.

Though Lisa Lisa expected Kars to fight, the Pillar Man used a vampire decoy to catch her off guard and take the Super Aja to Joseph's rage. As the Germans arrive to support Joseph as he rescues Lisa Lisa, a discussion between Speedwagon and Smoky reveals that Lisa Lisa was actually Joseph's assumed dead mother Elizabeth who avenged his father's death against the last of Dio's zombies. When Kars is seemingly defeated, Stroheim attempts to finish off the Pillar Man with multiple blasts of ultraviolet beam. But Kars has placed the Super-Aja embedded Stone Mask on his face, using the artificial sunlight to transform into the Ultimate Being. After a display of his powers, and ability to move freely in sunlight, Kars expresses his intention to kill Joseph who grabs the Super Aja while running to one of the Germans' planes to lure Kars away. Theorizing he might be able to destroy Kars with the planet, he attempts to bury the Pillar Man in magma. But Kars's reactive evolution allows him to survive while slicing Joseph's arm off and revealed to have developed Hamon, only for Joseph to use the Super Aja to intercept his opponent's attack to cause an eruption. While Kars ends up being jettisoned into space to drift away, Joseph was assumed dead. But Joseph, now with a prosthetic hand and married to Suzie Q after being nursed back, is mortified to find everyone held a funeral for him since his wife forgot to inform them of his survival. Forty nine years later, after lashing out on a Japanese tourist as JFK Airport, a 67-year-old Joseph flies out to Tokyo to see his daughter and grandson.

Ōtarō Maijō's 2012 novel Jorge Joestar, follows the titular character, the father of Joseph Joestar, and his story as a child in the Canary Islands and pilot in the Royal Air Force, as well as an alternate version who lives in Japan and is investigating strange events regarding alternate dimensions.[21]

The arc was adapted as part of the first season of David Production's anime television adaptation, airing between December 7, 2012 and April 5, 2013. Warner Bros. Entertainment released this series in English on July 28, 2015.[22]

The young Joseph of this series appears as a playable character, alongside his older self, in Capcom's 1998 arcade fighting game, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Joseph, Caesar, Wamuu, Esidisi and Kars appear as playable characters in Bandai Namco Games' 2013 fighting game, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle, with Lisa Lisa later appearing as a downloadable character. Joseph, Caesar, Stroheim, Lisa Lisa, Wamuu, Esidisi, and Kars also appear in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven, also by Bandai Namco.
