Escape the Night is a YouTube Red post modern meta fictional murder mystery reality television webseries hosted by Joey Graceffa that debuted on June 22, 2016.[1][2] The series is produced by Brian Graden Media.[3]
Premise
The series follows The Savant (Joey Graceffa) and additional invited guests, involved in their own respective characters varying each season, at a party which transports them into a historical era to solve a given mystery.[4][5] As the season progresses, the guests participate in a whodunit style murder mystery, competing with each other to escape from the historical era by solving the mystery.[6] During each episode, a guest is eliminated via a fictional ″death″ for failing a challenge,[4] until one or more guests ultimately win and are sent back to the Modern World.[5][7]

Production
Development
In October 2015, YouTube announced YouTube Red, a paid subscription service that would allow streaming videos ad-free, downloading videos for offline usage, and present new exclusive original series for YouTube Red subscribers.[8][9] At the time of announcement, ten various series were announced for 2016, including the Untitled Joey Graceffa project,[10][11] which was set to be produced by Brian Graden Media.[3] The series began filming near Valencia, California.[5]
On June 15, 2016, Graceffa released the trailer for his original series entitled Escape the Night,[12] which was set and released on June 22, 2016 with two episodes going live.[13] When interviewed after production, Graceffa commented that the idea behind Escape the Night was inspired by an episode themed around murder mystery appearing on television show Lizzie McGuire,[14] and closely related to the 1985 film Clue.[5] Furthermore, Graceffa shared his experience with filming the series, expressing "It was a really fun concept to put together," additionally mentioning, "And it was an idea that started small and ended up into something much bigger."[3]
On October 17, 2016, it was announced by Susanne Daniels, global head of content for YouTube, at MIPCOM that Escape the Night would be renewed for a second season.[15] Later on October 31, 2016, Joey Graecffa via Twitter announced the cast of the second season and scheduled debut of the second season to be on June 22, 2017.[16][17]
Reception
On IMDb, the series currently holds a score of 5.7/10; based on 254 reviews.[18] Common Sense Media's critical consensus reads, "Web celebs star in mediocre pseudo-reality horror series", while giving the show a rating of 2/5.[19]
