Erbert & Gerbert's Sandwich Shop[2] is a restaurant franchise specializing in submarine sandwiches. The chain was founded in Eau Claire, Wisconsin in 1987, with the first store opening in 1988.[3] The company has more than 50 locations throughout Arizona*, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana*, Nebraska*, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin. (*coming soon)[4] Its headquarters are in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.[5] Their shops are often located near college areas.
Kevin and Beth Schippers opened the first restaurant on Water Street in Eau Claire, Wisconsin in 1988.[3] The store and sandwiches are named after characters in stories Kevin's father used to tell him.[3] In 2003, Schippers was awarded Wisconsin’s 2003 Emerging Small Business Person from the Small Business Administration.[6] Because of Kevin's desire to pursue the ministry, in 2003 Schippers sold the franchising company to investors led by primary owner Eric Wolfe.[5] Kevin Schippers continues to own the original Eau Claire location.[7]
Erbert & Gerbert's prepare their sandwiches by cutting the bread and taking out the soft white dough part[8] and leaving the guts on top of the sandwich.
In 2009, Erbert & Gerbert's was awarded a Gold Effie Award for their advertising campaign, designed by Colle+McVoy.[9]
To celebrate the 20 year anniversary of Erbert & Gerbert's, a commercial was created allegedly using the world's largest Air Vortex Cannon.[10]
Products
Erbert and Gerbert's main menu items are submarine sandwiches. There are fourteen sandwiches on the menu. Sandwiches take names such as Halley's Comet and Comet Morehouse, as well as made up names such as Girf and Narmer.[11][12]
Besides these regularly listed menu items and their regularly listed bread options, as of December 2012,[13] The Erbert and Gerbert's franchise has added many new gluten-free products in order to cater to people with gluten allergies or those who simply want a more gluten-free lifestyle. The new menu, bolstered by the new partner, Udi's Gluten Free Foods,[14] contains three gluten free options in soup as well as at least three classic sandwiches with a gluten-free variant. The new gluten-free products are prepared separately to avoid cross-contamination with gluten products and are sent separately packaged. Guests who do not have the gluten allergy may also request to have the Udi's bread with any sandwich on the menu, should they choose to do so. All of these changes are an effort to reach out to people who may not have been able to try Erbert and Gerbert's and are also an effort to reach out to a growing fanbase who may want a change in options.[15]
