The Emscher-Niederrhein-Bahn (RB 35) is a Regionalbahn service in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It connects Wesel and Duisburg on the Rhine with Mönchengladbach on the Niers (sections of timetable routes 420, 425 and 485). Until 2016, it was called Der Weseler. Its name refers to the Emscher river (the location of Oberhausen Hbf and its future course to Bottrop Hbf) and the Lower Rhine, which the service crosses between Duisburg-Hochfeld Süd and Rheinhausen-Ost.

History

Der Weseler (until 2016)

Before 2016, there was already a service numbered as RB 35, operating under the name of Der Weseler. It ran mainly between Wesel and Duisburg Hbf and was extended during the peak hour from Duisburg to Düsseldorf and once a day to Cologne, as well as from Wesel to Emmerich and it thus functioned to relieve the Rhein-Express (RE 5). From the timetable change of 2016, the RE 5 was shortened to run on the Wesel–Duisburg–Düsseldorf–Köln–Bonn–Koblenz section and the section from Emmerich to Wesel was removed from the joint operations of the RE 5 and the RB 35; and now forms part of the new Rhein-IJssel-Express (RE 19) service. This replaced the old RB 35 service north of Duisburg Hauptbahnhof. The new RB 35 in turn took over the northern route of RB 33 between Wesel and Mönchengladbach via Duisburg and Krefeld.

Emscher-Niederrhein-Bahn (since 2016)

The current service has its origin in the northern service of the Rhein-Niers-Bahn (RB 33). Until December 2016, the line was formed of two hourly services, which were offset by about 30 minutes:

  1. Wesel–Duisburg–Krefeld–Mönchengladbach
  2. Duisburg–Krefeld–Mönchengladbach–Lindern–Aachen; this includes portion working on the line between Heinsberg and Lindern (former RB 33 south, now RB 33)

This meant there were services every 30 minutes on the section between Duisburg and Mönchengladbach. These are still available today, but are provided by the RB 33 and RB 35. This change formally separates the two services, which were already in effect separate services.

Operations

Until 2016, the service was operated by DB Regio NRW. On the Regionalbahn services, class 425/426 sets were used between Wesel and Duisburg; the supplementary trains between Emmerich and Düsseldorf/Cologne used both these sets and Silberling carriages.

Since 2016, the service has been operated by Abellio Rail NRW using FLIRT 3 EMUs.

Future

At the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn timetable change in December 2019, the Emscher-Niederrhein-Bahn is to be transferred from the Oberhausen to Wesel route to the Oberhausen to Bottrop route. A new Regional-Express service, the RE 49, running from Wesel to Wuppertal will replace the section lost by the RB 35. As a result, the Oberhausen–Arnhem railway will be served exclusively by Regional-Expresses, which will, however, stop at each station on the line.
