Elena Orlando (born June 15, 1992) is an American professional ice hockey player for the Connecticut Whale of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL).
Personal life
Orlando played collegiate-level women's ice hockey and rugby for Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.[1]
Playing career
Orlando played ice hockey in Sweden for one year after college.[2]
NWHL
Orlando joined the New York Riveters for the inaugural 2015/16 NWHL season as a defender. On 8 January 2016, a hit by Micaela Long on New York Riveters captain Ashley Johnston sparked a line brawl between New York Riveters and Connecticut Whale players, including Orlando. Orlando was subsequently suspended for one game by the NWHL's Player Safety Committee alongside Long.[3][4]
In August 2016, Orlando joined the Connecticut Whale as a practice player for the 2016/17 NWHL season.[5] In September 2016, Orlando was promoted to the Whale's full-time roster with a one-year, $12,000 contract following the departure of team captain Jessica Koizumi.[6] In March 2017, Orlando won an NWHL Foundation Award for her performance during the 2016/17 season.[7]
On 18 May 2017, it was announced that Orlando had re-signed with the Connecticut Whale for the 2017/18 season.[8]
