Ekamai International School (EIS) (Thai: โรงเรียนนานาชาติเอกมัย) is a private, co-educational, international school founded by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It is located in Watthana District, Bangkok, Thailand and serves grades pre-kindgarten to 12.[2] The school acquired an international school license in 1993 after previously operating under a vocational license.[3] EIS is Bangkok's longest continuously operating English language educational institution in Thailand. It is a part of the global Seventh-day Adventist education system, which is the world's second largest Christian school system.[4][5][6][7]
EIS History
After World War II ended in 1945, Thailand saw an influx of foreign missionaries from the United States of America. In 1946, American Adventist missionaries founded a missionary training institution. The first classes were held in a temporary building made out of thatched bamboo and a metal roof.[8]
In 1957 the school was known as Adventist English School, and the properties in the area, called Ekamai, were purchased and consolidated to expand the campus. Until the 1970s, the school's enrollments consisted mainly of pupils of American missionaries and foreign expats. At that time, the school became Thailand's first educational institution to use English as the language of instruction.[8]
Under the reign of Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun in 1992, the Thai Ministry of Education officially recognized the Adventist English School as an international school due to its multi-nationalities enrollment. The school's name was changed to Ekamai International School, and it became a popular choice among Thai and foreign nationals to seek enrollment while various selective English placement examinations were used.
The school received an official accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) since 1998.
