Presidential elections will be held in Egypt no earlier than 8 February 2018 and no later than 8 May 2018. As of August 2016, no one has formally announced his or her nomination for the election, however, the current President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi made some indications that he might run for second and final term, if the people want him to run, in an interview with the editors of the government-funded newspapers.[1][2]

Background

On 5 May 2017, former presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi called for opposition parties to unite behind a single candidate.[3]

Electoral system

The President of Egypt is elected using the two-round system.[4] The constitution of Egypt requires that election proceedings shall not begin earlier than 120 days from the date of the end of the current presidential term, which ends on 7 June 2018 and the results shall not be announced later than 30 days before the date of the end of the current presidential term.
