Edvin Kanka Ćudić (Serbian Cyrillic: Едвин Канка Ћудић) (born in Brčko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1988) is the Bosnian human rights activist who founded the Association for Social Research and Communications (UDIK), an organisation campaigning for human rights and reconciliation in the former Yugoslavia.[1]

In the biographical lexicon "Who is Who in B&H" (2014–2018), Edvin Kanka Ćudić is listed among the 3.181 most significant people in Bosnia and Herzegovina today, which through their works and actions contribute to a better B&H and who make this country a happier place.[2]

Association for Social Research and Communications (UDIK)

Ćudić is journalist by training. In 2013, he foundet and become coordinator of the Association for Social Research and Communications (UDIK).[3][4][5] As a coordinator of the UDIK, he publishes and presents to the public documents on war crimes[6][7] in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also works on mapping monuments to victims of wars in the countries of the former Yugoslavia.[8][9]

He founded UDIK with a want to commemorate civilian victims of war crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia. Thanks to his initiative, for the first time, many commemorations were organized. These commemorations were related to crimes against civilian victims of Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats. The activities that got the most attention were the commemoration of the non-Bosniak victims of the crimes committed in Sarajevo's Kazani and commemorations of Serbian victims of the crimes in Operation Storm organized in Sarajevo and Zagreb.

In May 2015, Federal Ministry of Interior of the Bosnia and Herzegovina banned the Sarajevo's commemoration of Serbian victims of the crimes committed in Operation Storm. Ćudić called it "a Bosniak solidarity with Croatian politics".[10] In May 2016 the same commemoration was banned by Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Croatia, but in the end it was held in Zagreb with high police security.[11]

Because of his insistence on war crimes such as Kazani, Trusina, or the Operation Storm, right-wing media in Bosnia and Herzegovina began to discriminate him and Bosniaks nationalists consider him as anti-Bosniak.[12]

2013 Protest against Theodor Meron

In November 2013 , the then president of the ICTY, Judge Theodor Meron spoke in Hotel Holiday Inn in Sarajevo, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the ICTY's war mission. At the beginning of his speech, Edvin Kanka Ćudić and other UDIK's activists, stood up and show a big poster "R.I.P. Justice". The protest lasted only 15 seconds because activists were thrown out of the hotel.

Edvin Kanka Ćudić, a group representative said to the press, was not a gesture against the ICTY, but rather an expression of dissatisfaction with the work of its President. Judge Meron, Ćudić said "has endangered the credibility of the Tribunal in The Hague and thus showed the world that justice has not been served. In public, he presents a story that runs counter to the actual events on the territory of the former Yugoslavia in the period from 1991 to 1995". The protest against Meron was prompted by "the judgments of Jovica Stanisić, Franko Simatović, Momčilo Perišić, and of Mladen Markač and Ante Gotovina", Ćudić said.[13]

Controversies

He was often the subject of threats from nationalists of all ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina.[14][15][16]

In February 2014 he came to the public during the unrest in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a coordinator of the protests in the Brčko District, he received over 100 threats of death. On that occasion, he told the press: "If they wanted to kill me, they would not threaten me".[17] In July he was threatened by Dino Šimunjak, a volunteer in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict who publicly told him: "You will not get out of this, Ćudić".

In May 2015 near the UDIK's office in Sarajevo, he was attacked with another UDIK activist. Just a few days later, a similar attack took place on the same site. Ambassador of the United States of America to B&H, Maureen Cormack, reacted and said that it was unacceptable to attack stones a human rights activist in Bosnia and Herzegovina.[18]

In February 2017 Ćudić was attacked again in Sarajevo, along with two other UDIK activists. The attack took place near the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina building. On that occasion, young men attacked him with stones and called him "Chetnik" (right-wing nationalist Serb).[19]

The Federal Ministry of Interior of the Bosnia and Herzegovina have never found the attackers.
